Happy Sunday Everyone! This week I want to talk about the importance of taking time to breathe. We all get caught up in life and other people that we forget that we have needs that also need to be met.
When we neglect ourselves it can cause us to become stressed, depressed, anxious, resentful, exhausted and on and on. So many of us, including me, have a hard time remembering when we need to take a break.
Recently I celebrated my 61st birthday and I realized that I was forgetting to breathe and I kept pushing myself dealing with family, clients, friends - all whose needs seemed more important than mine. But I was wrong, their needs are not more important for my needs are equally important.
So, for my birthday I asked Tim if we could do an overnight in Salem, NH for I wanted to go to the Tuscan Marketplace, but I knew I needed more than a day trip. We booked a room at the Artisan Hotel, which was amazing and got to spend a couple of days in Salem, NH.
It may not have been a long trip, but it gave me what I needed - time to breathe. I could feel my body relax and just let go of everything - I did not answer my cellphone at all and just enjoyed my time.
The hotel was friendly and made me feel special for my birthday - free desserts and breakfast and just acknowledging me. I did not expect that but it was a major feel good to be remembered and thought of and to be taken care of.
We all deserve days of pampering, but we can guilt ourselves either about spending the money or taking the time out to actually do it. But don't we owe it to ourselves to keep ourselves healthy? And I don't just mean physical health. We deserve to be emotionally and spiritually healthy as well and that was what this trip did for me. It renewed my spirit and removed that dark cloud that I was feeling around me.
I laughed and spent money without guilt. The Tuscan Marketplace reminded me of my grandfather and the food he used to prepare and got me excited to taste that food again. Tim bought me a pasta maker and gelato/ice cream maker and I can't wait to use them.
This overnight trip was just what the doctor ordered for me. I did not need a week away or days, I just needed an overnight away. A change of scenery so I could remember to breathe!
What do you need right now? What are things you do for yourself when you need to breathe? Do you feel guilty when you do these things? If so why? Where is the guilt coming from? Whatever the guilt, acknowledge it and then release it for it does not belong to you, it comes from a program that exists within you.
Remember, YOU matter and are just as important as everyone around you. You deserve to take a breath and to listen to what your soul needs. Give yourself permission to visit the spa, or to go on a retreat, or an overnight.
Give yourself permission to love yourself! We all deserve moments of self-care and even more importantly we all NEED moments of self-care. Self-care = self-love and don't we all deserve that?
