1) Boston's 2026 Outdoor Dining Season Officially Opens
The City of Boston has opened applications for the 2026 Outdoor Dining Program. The 2026 outdoor dining season will run from May 1 through October 31. The program covers temporary outdoor seating approvals on roadways and sidewalks and continues to offer an online application portal, application tracking, design templates, and city support resources.
 
The city also notes that businesses with outstanding fees from previous years will be ineligible to participate in the 2026 Outdoor Dining Program until those fees are resolved.

2) 2nd Boston Asian Restaurant Week Concludes (May 3–11)
The 2nd Boston Asian Restaurant Week, organized by NAAAP Boston, ran from May 3 to 11 in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month. Participants used a digital "passport" format through the Stamp Me app, earning stamps by visiting participating restaurants and ordering featured signature dishes. The event highlighted the diversity of Asian cuisine across Greater Boston, including Vietnamese, Burmese, Japanese, and sushi restaurants. Participating restaurants offered 1 to 3 featured dishes; diners who completed their passport could redeem stamps for limited-edition merchandise or restaurant gift cards.

1)NRA Data: Restaurant Menu Prices Up 3.6% Year-Over-Year in April; Food Costs 35% Above Pre-Pandemic Levels
According to the latest economic indicators published in May by the National Restaurant Association, U.S. restaurant menu prices edged up 0.2% month-over-month in April 2026 and rose 3.6% compared to April 2025 — the slowest annual pace in 15 months. On the supply side, the Producer Price Index for All Foods remains 35% above its February 2020 baseline. By category, fresh vegetables (+97.8%), unprocessed finfish (+60.3%), fats and oils (+23.7%), coffee (+20.0%), and beef (+14.2%) all remain significantly higher than a year ago. Meanwhile, approximately 40% of consumers report dining out less frequently than in the prior year.

2) 105th National Restaurant Association Show Wraps Up in Chicago
The 105th National Restaurant Association Show 2026 was held May 16–19 at McCormick Place in Chicago. The event drew more than 53,000 foodservice professionals from over 100 countries, with more than 2,000 exhibitors on the show floor, making it the largest foodservice trade event in the Western Hemisphere. Key themes this year centered on three areas: AI-powered restaurant technology (nearly one-third of operators now rank AI as their top technology opportunity in 2026), beverages as a growing revenue strategy, and operational efficiency in the face of persistently high food and labor costs.

3) Last Boston Market Location in Massachusetts Closes
According to boston.com, the last Boston Market location in Massachusetts has officially closed, leaving the state without any Boston Market restaurants. The chain has been contracting across the country in recent years, and the closure of its remaining Massachusetts locations is part of a broader national decline.

1)4th Asian Street Food & Music Festival
The 4th Asian Street Food & Music Festival, co-presented by the Harvard Square Philippine American Alliance (HSPAA) and the Harvard Square Business Association, will take place on Sunday, May 31 in Harvard Square, Cambridge. The free, family-friendly event runs from 11 AM to 6 PM. New this year is a Cosplay Showdown competition, alongside a beer garden, Asian food stalls, live performances, karaoke, and interactive games. Organizers are still accepting applications from food and retail vendors, cultural performers, and volunteers.

2) 1st Asian Food Festival 2026
The inaugural Asian Food Festival 2026 will be held at Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston on June 20–21, running from 11 AM to 7 PM each day. Free and open to the public, the festival features Asian cuisine tastings, live performances, games, and DJ sets, celebrating the diverse food cultures of the Asian diaspora across Greater Boston.

3) FIFA Fan Festival™ Boston — FIFA World Cup 2026
The FIFA World Cup 2026 runs June 11 through July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Boston is one of the host cities, with seven matches scheduled between June 13 and July 9. The official FIFA Fan Festival™ will be held at City Hall Plaza and will open alongside each Boston match, featuring large-screen broadcasts, local food and beverage vendors, and cultural programming. The tournament is expected to draw a significant influx of international and domestic visitors to the Greater Boston area throughout the summer.
