WEEK 3 | WE LIVE IN DETAIL

“We think in generalities, but we live in detail."
Alfred North Whitehead

The details are where life and art are experienced, it's what makes both unique, interesting, thought provoking, memorable, fun, wondrous, and special. For our third and final (!) week of this project, we will be diving into the details. (If you're planning on doing a project a season, try focusing on details that are specific to this time of year where you are!)

DAILY PROMPTS FOR THE WEEK

Sunday | Day 15
COLOR
What color stood out to you today? What color reminds you of this season? Consider picking a color to focus on throughout the day and seeing what you find. Add a color you like to your project from a flyer, sticker, packaging, scrapbook paper, etc.

Monday | Day 16
LINE
Notice the ways line show up in your home, in shadows and light, on a walk through your neighborhood, in nature, on transportation routes and maps, the way you draw connections between things.

Tuesday | Day 17
PATTERN
A pattern by definition is a discernible regularity, repeated design, or predictable sequence of elements in the world, abstract ideas, behavior, or data. What patterns crossed your path today? Is there a pattern that appears during this time of year?

Wednesday | Day 18
SHAPE
Look for different shapes that appear in your surroundings, the food you eat, the clothes you wear, in the people, animals, and wildlife you come across, the cars and buildings you see. What stands out to you? Which was your favorite?

Thursday | Day 19
VARIETY
For the past few days we've focused on just one element. Try mixing a few in your section (for example, use color, pattern, and shape) inspired by the things you've come across today. You can also interpret what variety means to you or share an example of it from your day or this season.

Friday | Day 20
FOCUS
Zoom in and focus on a certain detail or spot. Try using a view finder to help you focus on a specific area. Here's more information about it with an example and here's an easy tutorial to follow (you can opt out of using the string if you'd like.)

Saturday | Day 21!
REFLECT
It's our last day! This prompt can be interpreted in many ways, make it yours. A few ideas: choose a favorite technique or prompt from these past 3 weeks to use again, create a summary (collages or weavings work nicely for this) of the past 3 weeks. Reflect on what this time of year means to you or create a vision board for the future. Congratulations on making it to the final day!

TAKING OFF THE TAPE
If you used the tape method to create your sections and plan on taking it off, here are a few things to consider:

I personally like to sit with the final section and let it have its own day. Then I'll peel off the tape the following day. It's up to you how you want to do it and I totally get it if you want to rip it off ASAP because you've already been waiting 21 days to do that :)

Before taking the tape off, I suggest taking a photo of it! Even if you don't plan on sharing it anywhere, I think it's fun to capture what your completed project looks like with the tape. It's an important part of the project and I like keeping a record of that. It's also fun to see the before / after!

When you're ready to peel, here are a few tips:
  • Peel the tape off slowly and carefully! Even when the tape works well with the paper, sometimes water might have gotten under it or there's a little snag or tear in the paper that can cause an issue so being careful and going slowly helps to prevent any tears or blemishes. I've never had any issues with the peeling and I think this helps to ensure it all goes smoothly!
  • If you loaded up a section with a lot of paint and the tape is trapped under a big blob of it, you can use a craft knife to lightly cut through the paint so the tape can be peeled off.
  • I've never tried this but have heard that if your tape won't peel off because it's too sticky, use a blow dryer to warm it up and this will help it come off.

FEATURING YOUR WORK
I'd love to do an Instagram post with photos of our finished projects! If you'd like to be included please email me a photo once you're done (this way I know I have your permission--I won't be taking photos from the gallery) of your entire finished piece along with your first name and IG handle if you have one. I can include up to 19 projects. Please don't be shy :) I'll send a reminder in the final emails that go out.

And if you post your project on Instagram, please be sure to tag me @atiliay so I can repost and share it!

I'll be sending out the final check-in email on Thursday and a final wrap up email on Sunday! Talk to you then. In the meantime enjoy the process and the final week of this project--have fun with it!
