Hi First name / Friend,

June is quite simply my favorite month of the year. The longer days and abundant sunshine help wash off the residue of winter.

It’s also Pride Month, and who doesn’t love infinite rainbows? 🌈🌈🌈

But Pride is about so much more than celebration. It’s also about safety, resistance, and visibility—especially right now, when trans and queer kids are under attack across the country. I believe that protecting their freedom to express themselves is sacred work.

I haven’t always been proud to be queer. I grew up in a very sheltered, conservative religious community where queerness had consequences—expulsion from school, the threat of conversion therapy, being sent to hell for all eternity, and a constant message that who I was needed to be hidden or changed.

It’s been almost a decade since I came out, and I’m still unpeeling the layers of religious trauma… and finding juicy pockets of queer, embodied joy. I'm sending healing to tiny baby Courtney, pictured above at age 6.

That journey deeply informs the way I live, the way I parent, and the way I teach.

Many of the kids who come to my art camps are queer, gender-expansive, or have queer families. I create spaces where they can explore their identities, use their voices, and feel completely safe to be themselves.

And in doing that, I also heal something tender in myself.

I didn’t get to experience queer joy as a child—but I do now, every time we make art together. Every time we laugh, play, and create without shame. Every time a kid feels free.
