Hello Beautiful Souls,

May this find you wherever you need to be, enjoying as much as outside time as you can manage.  Here we are at June's doorstep - and as usual for this time of year it feels like things are moving quickly.

While I have been enjoying the uptick in energy this time of year brings, I notice that what helps me stay anchored is taking micro-breaks from what I'm doing….I notice that if I don't, I can get swept up in the fast paced vortex of this seasonal energy and then overshoot my body's limits.  Have you noticed this?

We are just 3 weeks out from the Summer Solstice on June 21 - moving us closer and closer to maximum light ( and maximum Yang energy).

The summer season is directly linked with the Fire element.  Following the rapid upward growth of Spring (Wood energy) , nature now reaches outwards to fill as much space as she can (Fire energy).

Unlike the other four elements, which only have two Officials, the Fire element has four Officials: the Heart & Small Intestine, and the Pericardium & Triple Burner.

The Heart is known as the “Emperor” , and governs blood circulation and houses the Shen (our Spirit, emotions and consciousness).

The Small Intestine helps us separate what is useful and what is not - both physically and emotionally.  It supports digestion, clear thinking and good judgement.  When out of balance, we may experience digestive upset, confusion, or difficulty making decisions.

The Pericardium  is known as the Heart's protector, and it helps us maintain healthy emotional boundaries while staying open to connection.  It supports our ability to give and receive love without becoming overwhelmed.

The Triple Burner (San Jiao) is not an organ, but a system.  It operates as the body's communication and transportation network, helping to regulate the flow of energy, fluids and warmth - ensuring all systems work together smoothly.

Together, these Fire element organs support joy, connection, clear communication, emotional balance and the healthy flow of energy throughout the body.

In TCM, we are always interested in balance - it's fundamental.   Too little Fire may leave us feeling withdrawn, uninspired, lonely, or emotionally flat. Too much Fire can lead to anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, irritability, overwhelm, racing thoughts, or feeling “wired but tired.”

How Fire Imbalance Shows Up in Daily Life

Fire imbalance may be occurring if you notice:
  • Insomnia - difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Vivid dreams or restless sleep
  • Feeling overstimulated or overwhelmed
  • Anxiety or nervousness
  • Excessive excitement followed by exhaustion
  • Heart palpitations
  • Emotional volatility
  • Feeling “flat” or disconnected from joy or meaningful relationships
  • Excessive talking or difficulty slowing down
  • Heat symptoms such as night sweats, hot flashes, mouth ulcers, or red complexion
Modern life often pushes us toward excess Fire through constant stimulation, busy schedules, social media, screen time, and chronic stress.

Summer invites us to enjoy life—but not to burn ourselves out.

How do we support Healthy Fire Energy?

  1. Prioritize Rest Alongside Activity.  Fire energy naturally wants to move outward, but balance comes from creating space for stillness which acts like an anchor.
Supportive practises :
  • Morning meditation
  • Qi Gong or Tai Chi
  • Yin Yoga or Yoga Nidra
  • Gentle evening walks
  • Time in nature
  • Limiting screen exposure, *especially in the evenings
  • Inviting moments of pause throughout the day

    2.    Nourish Meaningful Connection.  Your beautiful Heart thrives on authentic connection.

Possible options:
  • Sharing meals with loved ones
  • Calling a friend you’ve been thinking about
  • Practicing gratitude
  • Spending time with animals
  • Volunteering or helping others
  • Having conversations that go beyond surface-level interactions

    3.    Create Space for Joy.  Because Joy is the emotion of the Heart.

Tune in to Joy by asking:
  • What genuinely lights me up?
  • When do I feel most alive?
  • What have I been postponing that brings me pleasure?           Sidenote: Simple pleasures often nourish the Heart most deeply.

Foods That Support Fire Season

Summer foods are naturally lighter, hydrating, and cooling.  At this time of year, bring more focus to adding cooling foods rather than lots of cold drinks/desserts as these have a tendency to stagnate digestion and deplete your Spleen Qi and weaken your digestion (fatigue and loose stools anyone?)…

Cooling foods to enjoy:
  • Cucumbers
  • Watermelon
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries
  • Lettuce
  • Arugula
  • Radishes
  • Zucchini
  • Celery
  • Mint
  • Cilantro
  • Sprouts
  • Tofu
  • Mung beans

Bitter flavors are particularly beneficial during Fire season because they help clear excess heat and support Heart function.

Try incorporating one or more of these bitters:
  • Dandelion greens
  • Kale
  • Endive
  • Radicchio
  • Arugula
Cooling Herbal Teas
  • Peppermint
  • Lemon balm
  • Chrysanthemum
  • Hibiscus
  • Tulsi (Holy Basil)

Summer Recipe: Watermelon Mint Cooler

Ingredients:
  • 4 cups watermelon, cubed
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Handful of fresh mint leaves
Blend watermelon, lime, and mint until smooth. NO ICE ;)
This refreshing drink helps support hydration while gently clearing summer heat.  Sometimes I just blend the watermelon on it's own and it's AMAAAZING on a hot day!

Summer invites us to shine, connect, and celebrate life. When Fire is balanced, we stay grounded and can experience warmth and joy without burnout, and connection without losing ourselves.
