Across the fair, the focus extended beyond individual artworks and toward the experiences created around them. Installations unfolded through courtyards, galleries opened into larger cultural dialogues, and moments of reflection emerged through material, light, sound, and storytelling.

Artists such as Hashel Al Lamki, Kevork Mourad, and Yaw Owusu explored ideas of memory, belonging, landscape, and identity through distinctly personal visual languages. Their works invited visitors to engage with place not only as a physical setting, but as something shaped by history, emotion, and collective experience.

 

What remained most memorable was the way art interacted with its surroundings. Architecture, design, performance, and conversation became part of the same narrative, creating an experience that felt immersive and deeply connected to the cultural energy of the region.

Art Dubai continues to evolve beyond the format of a traditional art fair. It has become a space where disciplines overlap, perspectives meet, and new cultural narratives begin to take shape.

THE ART OF COLLECTING

Bringing together perspectives from the worlds of art and design, a conversation hosted by Maleki Advisory and Art Dubai explored instinct, taste, and the evolving language of collecting. The discussion reflected on the role that art continues to play within the spaces we inhabit and the ways collections shape our experience of home.

One idea emerged repeatedly throughout the discussion: the distinction between owning art and living with it. The most meaningful pieces are not simply displayed. They become part of daily life, shaping the atmosphere of a room and influencing the way a space is experienced over time. Art has the ability to spark conversation, evoke memory, and create a sense of connection that extends beyond aesthetics. When thoughtfully integrated into a home, it becomes part of its identity, contributing to a narrative that feels personal, layered, and deeply individual.

As collecting continues to evolve, art is increasingly viewed not as a finishing touch, but as an integral part of the design process itself. A piece can inspire a palette, inform a spatial dialogue, or become the starting point for a broader narrative within a home. In this way, collecting becomes less about acquisition and more about building a lasting relationship with the objects that continue to inspire us.

Rio represents the culmination of a comprehensive design journey, bringing together architecture, interiors, bespoke detailing, and curation within a cohesive residential vision.

 

Developed through a close collaboration between studio and client, the project evolved through a process of refinement, exploration, and careful decision making. Every element was considered within the context of the whole, allowing the residence to develop a distinct identity that feels layered, refined, and deeply considered.

The arrival sequence establishes the architectural language of the home from the outset. Framed by steel doors and defined by a checkerboard floor that extends through the entrance hall, the space introduces a strong sense of rhythm, proportion, and material contrast. The staircase acts as a sculptural focal point, setting the tone for the rooms that unfold beyond.

Throughout the project, particular attention was given to the relationship between architecture and interior design. The dining room exemplifies this approach through its timber ceiling detailing, generous proportions, and expansive steel framed openings that connect the interior to the surrounding landscape.

 

Natural light becomes an active design element, shifting throughout the day and revealing different qualities within the materials. The furnishings were intentionally restrained, allowing craftsmanship, scale, and architectural clarity to remain at the forefront of the experience.

As the architectural framework became established, attention shifted towards the layers that would bring character and individuality to the interiors. Furniture, artwork, lighting, and collected objects were introduced gradually, creating spaces that feel curated rather than composed in a single moment.

 

Colour appears selectively throughout the residence, creating points of contrast within a calm and measured palette. This approach allows individual pieces to contribute personality and expression while remaining connected to the wider design language of the home.

The kitchen became one of the defining spaces within the project. Conceived as a central architectural volume, it combines bespoke cabinetry, natural stone, and carefully integrated detailing within a composition that feels equally functional and refined.

 

Particular attention was given to material transitions, proportion, and craftsmanship. Floral upholstered seating introduces an unexpected layer of texture and personality, reinforcing the balance between precision and warmth that characterises the project as a whole.

The office demonstrates the project's commitment to designing every space with equal consideration. Custom joinery forms the foundation of the room, creating a seamless integration of workspace, storage, and display within a carefully composed architectural framework.

 

Material continuity remains central to the design, with warm timber finishes, woven detailing, and a restrained palette establishing a sense of cohesion with the wider residence. Framed views towards the landscape soften the formality of the workspace, creating an environment that feels purposeful, refined, and highly personal.

The bathrooms continue the material language established throughout the residence. Natural stone, bespoke joinery, and carefully selected finishes create spaces that feel calm, refined, and immersive.

 

Approached with the same level of attention as the primary living areas, these rooms demonstrate the importance of consistency across every aspect of the project. Proportion, detailing, and materiality remain central, allowing the spaces to feel understated yet highly considered.

What distinguishes the project is not a singular design gesture, but the consistency of its vision. Architecture, interiors, bespoke elements, furnishings, and decorative layers were developed in parallel, allowing each decision to contribute to a cohesive whole.

 

The completed residence reflects a commitment to craftsmanship, thoughtful curation, and enduring design. More than a collection of individual spaces, it represents a carefully composed environment where every layer has been considered and every detail has a purpose.

It is a question that sits at the heart of every project we undertake.

 

The answer is rarely found in a singular element. It emerges through atmosphere, materiality, colour, light, and the subtle relationships that exist between them. These layers shape how a space is experienced, creating environments that feel authentic, personal, and deeply connected to those who inhabit them.

 

In collaboration with Jotun, this question became the starting point for a conversation exploring the emotional dimension of residential design. Together, we reflected on the role of colour as a design tool, one capable of shaping atmosphere, reinforcing architectural intent, and influencing the way spaces are experienced over time.

The discussion also centered on the importance of intentionality. The most compelling interiors are rarely defined by abundance, but by clarity. A considered palette, natural materials, carefully curated objects, and an understanding of proportion often have a greater impact than any singular design gesture.

 

Color remains one of the most powerful tools within this process. It can establish character, create continuity, introduce contrast, or bring warmth and familiarity to a space. When approached with purpose, it becomes part of the architectural narrative rather than a decorative layer applied at the end.

The conversation reinforced the idea that great design extends beyond aesthetics. It is shaped by atmosphere, intention, and the subtle decisions that influence how a space is experienced over time.

BETWEEN CONCEPT AND COMPLETION

As Vicarello and Athens move closer to completion, the focus has shifted towards the final stages of execution. With the architectural framework firmly in place, recent weeks have been dedicated to overseeing bespoke installations, material applications, and the many details that bring a project together.

This stage offers an opportunity to experience the spaces in a new way. Custom joinery, architectural features, and carefully selected finishes are beginning to take their place within the interiors, transforming drawings and material studies into tangible environments. The relationship between materials, light, and proportion becomes increasingly apparent as each layer is introduced.

Alongside installations, ongoing site visits and snagging rounds continue to play an important role in the process. These reviews allow every element to be assessed, refined, and resolved, ensuring consistency throughout the project and alignment with the original design intent.

With completion now within sight, attention turns to the final details. The remaining phases will focus on finishing touches, styling, and the careful integration of bespoke elements that will ultimately define the character of each space.

As the summer season settles across the region, the relationship between indoors and outdoors takes on a different role. Rather than extending daily life into the landscape, the focus shifts towards creating meaningful visual connections to it. Gardens, courtyards, terraces, and pools become carefully framed views that bring a sense of calm, light, and greenery into the home.

 

Within Rio, this relationship became an important part of the design language. Expansive steel framed openings were positioned to capture the surrounding landscape, allowing natural light, planting, and outdoor living areas to become part of the interior experience. Every view was considered, creating moments where architecture and landscape feel intrinsically connected.

The outdoor spaces were furnished with the Kettal Insula collection, chosen for its relaxed proportions and understated presence. Positioned beneath shaded terraces and overlooking the garden, the collection contributes to the atmosphere of the landscape rather than dominating it. Its soft forms introduce a sense of ease that complements the surrounding architecture and planting.

What elevates an outdoor environment is often not a singular element, but the dialogue between landscape, furniture, architecture, and light. When these layers are considered together, outdoor spaces become more than an extension of the home. They become part of the overall experience of living within it.

This season's moodboard draws inspiration from destinations where architecture, landscape, and leisure exist in effortless harmony. Sun washed stone, woven textures, striped fabrics, weathered pottery, and shimmering water come together to create a palette that feels warm, relaxed, and transportive.

 

Layered neutrals are punctuated by touches of terracotta, citrus, and sea green, capturing the atmosphere of long afternoons spent beneath shaded terraces and beside the water. More than a collection of materials and colors, the board explores the sensory qualities that define summer through texture, light, and memory.

 

Through these references, we celebrate the places, objects, and moments that continue to inspire the way we think about design, travel, and seasonal living.
