A Message from the Mayor

As summer arrives in Bay Roberts, there is a great deal to look forward to throughout our community.
The coming months will bring a full calendar of activities and events for residents and visitors alike, from summer day camps and swimming pool programs, to concerts, community celebrations, recreation opportunities, and more! These events create a chance to connect with neighbours, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy all that Bay Roberts has to offer.
Summer is also a wonderful time to explore our trails, parks, businesses, and coastline while welcoming visitors who choose Bay Roberts as part of their Newfoundland and Labrador experience.
With schools soon closing for the summer, please remember that children will be more active throughout our neighbourhoods, playgrounds, and community spaces. Drivers are asked to slow down, stay alert, and exercise extra caution to help keep everyone safe during the season.
I encourage everyone to take part in the many activities planned throughout the season and to support the volunteers, organizations, businesses, and staff who help make these opportunities possible.
On behalf of Council and staff, I wish you a safe, enjoyable, and memorable summer.
Sincerely,
Mayor Geoff Seymour

The Pride flag was raised at Town Hall to mark the beginning of Pride Month.
Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate diversity, recognize the contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ people in our community, and reflect on the importance of creating a place where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.
To our 2SLGBTQIA+ residents, neighbours, friends, family members, colleagues, and visitors: you are an important part of our community. Your presence, experiences, and contributions help make Bay Roberts a more welcoming place.
Our community is stronger when people feel respected, included, and supported. Throughout Pride Month, we join communities across Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond in celebrating acceptance, belonging, and the freedom to be yourself.

Light the Lamp was established in 2018 by the Town of Bay Roberts. Its mission was to host a family friendly street hockey tournament. Kids between the general ages of 4-14 can participate in a game of street hockey and have fun, no matter the skill level.
The weekend tournament will take place at the Wilbur Sparkes Complex in the heart of Bay Roberts on June 20-21. All rinks are in one location which allow it to be efficient and safe. We have a boys/co-ed division and a girls division which continues to grow. The event has grown significantly over the years from the first tournament hosting just over 100 teams to now hosting 280 teams. This brings approximately 7000 people to our town for the weekend.
This event is organized solely by the Towns Recreation Department and its amazing team of volunteers, with the help of some of our wonderful community sponsors. We stand true to keeping this family friendly and believe we have created an amazing event that continues to shine.
Note for residents
All residents on Adler Place, Long Lane, Station Road, Bishops Road, Peppers Road and Peppers Place will be provided with two parking passes for the weekend, as all of these roads will be closed to the public. Residents who require additional parking passes may contact Suzanne at (709) 786-2126 ext. 231.

These roads will be blocked and security will be allowing residents in and out. The use of a parking pass will be the only way on and off the street. You may have parking passes for the amount of vehicles you can fit in your driveway. Any vehicles parked on the streets will be at risk of being ticketed or towed.

Ensuring everyone’s safety and keeping roads accessible for emergencies is our priority.

The Water Street Phase 2 Infrastructure Project has begun.
The Town of Bay Roberts would like to advise residents that construction for the Water Street Phase 2 project is beginning. Work in the area between Barracks Road and the Conception Bay Highway will include the installation of a new water line and storm sewer system.
As part of this work, Water Street will be closed between Roach Place and Barracks Road during construction hours. Water Street will remain open to local traffic only, with access maintained for residents.

Detour routes are clearly marked via Conception Bay Highway and Barracks Road, with an alternate route available via George Mercer Drive and Klondyke Causeway.
Residents and motorists should be prepared for increased construction activity, traffic delays, and temporary disruptions in the area while work is underway. Additional information regarding detours, road closures, and traffic impacts will be shared as construction progresses on social media and Voyent Alert! The Town appreciates the public's patience and cooperation as these important infrastructure upgrades are completed.

From its inception in 2006 the Pigeon Inlet Quilters’ Guild has been actively involved in the local community.  Our constitution states that, “the purpose of the guild is to preserve and promote the art and craft of quilting, to share ideas and expertise through programs and workshops in a welcoming environment, and to contribute to the community through quilted offerings”.

Over the years we have  followed these goals in numerous ways.  There has been direct involvement with students at Amalgamated Academy and Ascension Collegiate through two different projects.
In 2019 Pigeon Inlet Guild members ran an after school learn to quilt program for students in grade 8.  This was voluntary on the part of both quilters and students.  Many young students experienced the thrill of completing small projects and some of these students continue to practice this craft years later.
During the 2024-25 school year, students at Ascension Collegiate worked closely with several quilters to design and produce original works for a project called Threading Traditions Together.  The idea was to explore what heritage means today and in the future.  This work has been prominently displayed at the school and will be featured at the quilt show in July.

Two major original works have also been produced.
In 2010 The Pigeon Inlet Quilt was presented to the Bay Roberts Cultural Foundation.  Each block in this quilt portrays one of the stories from Tales From Pigeon Inlet by Ted Russell. It is a one of a kind creation made by the hands of forty-eight guild members over a two year period.  This work is completely hand quilted adding to the value of this wonderful piece.  It is on permanent display at the Bay Roberts Visitor Information Center  but will be shown in July at Seams Like Yesterday Quilt Show.
The second piece was produced in 2017 to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the Battle at Vimy Ridge.  Each member of the guild participated in the making of this quilt either by producing a block or by making one of the many three dimensional poppies which form part of the border.  We are very proud of this quilt as it represents and pays tribute to several guild family members who served during the first World War.  This magnificent work is on permanent display at the Christopher Pratt Museum, Bay Roberts Council Building.  It can be viewed when the museum is open and we are proud of the way it is so beautifully displayed there.

Each year, during one of our scheduled workdays, many quilters gather to work collaboratively  to produce a charity quilt.  The group/organization which receives one of these quilts usually holds a raffle draw thereby raising thousands of dollars for their cause.  Over twenty years quilts have been donated to the Bay Roberts Library, Avalon Wolverines Search and Rescue, Baccalieu Trail SPCA, Guatemala Missions, The Angel Fund. CBN Minor Soccer International Travel Team, etc. In addition to these, the guild has donated pillows for breast cancer patients, pillowcases for the Janeway, quilts to Daffodil House and O’Shaughnessey House, fidget mats to Eastern Health Recreation, comfort quilts for those impacted by the CBN wildfires and finger pin cushions for our sister guild, the Moose Jaw Prairie Hearts Quilters guild.

Should your group/organization wish to request a quilt for your fund raising efforts, please write a letter to the Pigeon Inlet Quilters’ Guild, PO Box 330 South River, NL A0A 3W0

Keep in mind the twentieth anniversary quilt show, Seams Like Yesterday July 24-26 at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts.  Watch next month's Klondyke Gazette for full details.  See you at the show.
