Kasey's Origin Story
“I was born in Germany and raised in Japan, which gave me a very unique perspective on life from an early age. I attended Japanese school growing up, was immersed in the culture daily, and learned to speak Japanese fluently. Being raised overseas shaped so much of who I am today, from how I view community and respect for others to my appreciation for tradition, creativity, and slowing down enough to enjoy life’s meaningful moments.
When I moved to America at 16 years old, it was a huge transition and culture shock, but also the beginning of a completely new chapter in my life. Growing up between cultures taught me adaptability and resilience, but it also gave me a deep appreciation for connection and belonging, which is something I now try to create for other families to the best of my abilities.
Growing up, I loved being active and creative. My favorite sport in high school was softball, I played the drums in band, was part of the step team, and loved to dance and sing, which taught me a lot about teamwork, discipline, and expression. I’ve always been someone who enjoys creating, building, and connecting with people.
I met my husband, Matt, in Hawaii, and together we eventually made our way to Texas in 2010. In 2018 we were looking for land to call our own and hoping to slow life down a little. We accidentally stumbled upon Winnsboro, and honestly, it felt like fate. There was something about this town that immediately felt different, the people, the pace, the sense of community, and the beauty of East Texas. It felt like home before we even realized it.
Today, we live in a very old home filled with history, character, and stories in its bones. It’s imperfect, full of projects, and deeply loved. We have built a life here surrounded by nature, family, and community.”
A Life Full of Adventure
Outside of Ironwood, I also run a local book club called Shelf Care Book Club ETX, where we gather once a month at the beautiful Oaklea Mansion. It has become such a special space for connection, conversation, and friendship. I also created my social media page, Go Wildflower, as a place to share gardening tips, travel adventures, family life, homeschooling, and genuine moments of everyday living. It’s a reflection of my love for storytelling, nature, adventure, and finding beauty in the ordinary.
Gardening is one of my greatest joys and honestly my happy place. There is something healing about digging your hands into the soil, growing food, and slowing down enough to appreciate the simple things. Life here has taught me to value connection, community, and intentional living.
Matt and I are raising two wild, wonderful redheads, Emeileen and Odin, who keep life exciting and full of adventure. They are full of creativity, curiosity, and life, and so much of what I do is inspired by wanting to create a meaningful childhood and strong community not only for them, but for other families too.
The Core of Ironwood Academy
Beyond being a homeschooling mom, wife, gardener, and farmer, I also serve as the president of Ironwood Academy, a nonprofit organization that grew from a dream to create meaningful educational opportunities and community connections for local families. I am one of the original founders of the academy, when it was first established as Bizzy Bee Academy in 2021, and watching it grow into what it is today has been one of the greatest honors.
I cannot take all the credit for Ironwood, though. While I may serve as president and have helped shape much of the vision, this organization would never have reached the heights it is reaching now without the incredible people surrounding it. Our board members, teachers, volunteers, families, donors, and community supporters are the heartbeat of what we do. Ironwood has truly become something built by community, for community.
At its core, Ironwood Academy exists to support families through meaningful educational opportunities, enrichment programs, leadership experiences, and real-world learning. We are not a traditional school, and we are not trying to fit children into one narrow mold. We believe children learn best when they are encouraged to explore their interests, build confidence, ask questions, create, collaborate, and experience hands-on learning in a supportive environment.
Designed to Build Practical Skills & Confidence
Our programs are designed to help meet families where they are while creating strong community connections along the way. We currently offer a hybrid learning support program focused on core subjects like math and language arts, an enrichment program with hands on classes, tutoring options, stand-alone classes, workshops, leadership opportunities, and community-centered educational events.
One thing that makes Ironwood unique is that we place a huge emphasis on hands-on and real-world learning. We want children to not only learn information, but understand how to apply it in everyday life. Students have opportunities to participate in things like drama productions, entrepreneurship experiences through our Children’s Business Fair, life skills classes, STEM opportunities, art workshops, gardening, baking, leadership development, and community projects. We want kids to discover who they are and what they are passionate about while building practical skills and confidence along the way.
Ironwood Highlight
One of the greatest blessings has been seeing local organizations and leaders believe in what we are building. We are incredibly thankful to have programs like Team VIP, sponsored by the Gilbreath Memorial Library and taught by Manuel Pasillas. Students learn leadership skills and gain workforce readiness experience to help prepare them for the future. We are also honored to have the support of the Wood County Beekeepers Association through a hands-on bee program for our students and our own Academy bee hives. The amount of love and support we have received from this community has been humbling and inspiring.
The Transition; Why We Changed Our Name
The transition from Bizzy Bee Academy to Ironwood Academy happened because our mission outgrew our original name. As we evolved, we wanted a name that better reflected the heart of what we were becoming. When we began researching the Ironwood tree and discovered how deeply rooted it is in the Piney Woods of East Texas, everything clicked into place.
Historically, the Caddo Indians built their communities around Ironwood trees because of how valuable and dependable they were. The tree provided medicinal uses, materials for tools and homes, shelter for wildlife, and strength for the community around it. It was deeply rooted, resilient, and life-giving. That symbolism resonated deeply with us because that is exactly what we want Ironwood Academy to be, a place deeply rooted in purpose, strength, community, and support. A place families can rely on. A place where children and families can grow.
Today, Ironwood Academy proudly operates as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to serving families through education, enrichment, leadership opportunities, and meaningful community connection.
We are still growing, still dreaming, still building, and we are incredibly thankful for every person who has walked alongside us on this journey.
Looking Forward
As we move into the 2026–2027 school year, Ironwood Academy is continuing to grow in exciting ways. We are expanding both our hybrid and enrichment opportunities and bringing in even more specialized classes and partnerships for our students and families.
We are incredibly excited to partner with Vanora Studio to bring sewing classes to Ironwood Academy. Sewing is such a valuable skill that encourages creativity, patience, independence, and practical life skills.
We are also thrilled to partner with Big Sky STEM to offer drone classes for students. This is a huge opportunity for our kids to gain exposure to modern technology, STEM education, engineering concepts, aviation skills, teamwork, and problem-solving in a fun and engaging environment. Programs like this help bridge the gap between education and future career possibilities while allowing students to experience exciting hands-on learning opportunities that many rural communities do not always have easy access to.
We want students to leave Ironwood with confidence, curiosity, strong character, practical skills, and meaningful relationships.
