Hi First name / Quilty Friend,

In this edition: State Named Quilt Blocks, Send in Your Patriotic Quilt Pictures, and a few of my favorite quilty treasures.

Why Are So Many Quilt Blocks Named After States …

If you've spent much time browsing quilt block patterns, you've probably noticed something interesting. Traditional quilt blocks are sprinkled with state names (and sometimes cities), from coast to coast. There are blocks called Kansas Troubles, Indiana Puzzle, Ohio Star, Nebraska Windmill, Arkansas Traveler, Carolina Lily, and many more. It raises an interesting question: Why did quilt designers name so many blocks after states?

The answer takes us on a journey through American history, migration, newspapers, and a quilter's natural love of storytelling …

Welcome to the First Quiltblox Online Patriotic Quilt Show!

On the 4th of July, Quiltblox will host an online quilt show featuring patriotic quilts shared by readers and fellow quilters from across the country. And I would absolutely love for you to participate.

Whether your patriotic quilt is traditional, modern, scrappy, or vintage-inspired, a wall hanging, table topper, table runner, bed quilt, pillow, received as a gift or an award, or even a treasured family heirloom … It all counts

Please send me a picture, and tell me something about your quilt (who made it and why), and the name of the pattern if you used a commercial pattern. Have more than one? Perfect - send me as many as you'd like, and I'll include them.
