Some highlights of the conference for us:
  • Spotting this luscious colorway in a sculpture by our artist friend, Claire Kelly, in the Corning Museum of Glass shop. A lot of museum shops disappoint us - the array of locally made and artisan-made work in this shop was the opposite!
  • Documenting our friend Sandra Bacchi as she gave a Lecmo (lecture/demonstration hybrid) on her creative process, incorporating images into glass.
  • Discovering some local gems offering yummy gluten-free foods, like these bagel sandwiches from Bagels, Babes, and Beans. We also ate homemade gluten-free spaghetti and meatballs for the first time ever at Ellen & Michaels (delish!) And the people at these places were sooo genuinely friendly.
  • Incredible glassblowing demonstration by Davide Salvadore and sons and Lucio Bubacco in the amphitheater hot shop. They kicked off the morning energy with some live dancing! We've been fortunate enough to see (and photograph) Davide work before, but there's really no such thing as seeing a master too many times. And this rare collaboration between two of the greatest living masters was really a treat.
  • Kerry Collison is a British artist who combines flameworked glass forms in her contemporary stained glasswork, something we've never seen before. The demonstration was fascinating, and she's hilarious.
  • GAS members mounted a temporary exhibition of lit sculpture along the pedestrian bridge, and this piece by Alex Ubatuba played perfectly with the sunset.
  • Laura Donefer is a literal living legend who has produced a Glass Fashion Show 17 times at GAS conferences (not annually), among her many accomplishments. We've heard about it and seen photos, but nothing compares to experiencing this phenomenal display of creativity in person!
  • We saw so many old friends, met new ones, saw gorgeous art, got inspired, ate well. And we're ready for a really long nap!
