Rochester Ready

Hello, we're the orientation team.

We are so excited to help you and your classmates get ready for URochester this fall. Our team of professional staff and Orientation Leaders (pictured above) are dedicated to making your transition to the University as smooth as possible.
This is the first of our Rochester Ready newsletters you will receive throughout the summer. This newsletter (along with our website) will be your primary source for important information and key steps to preparing for the fall semester. As we get closer to your arrival on campus, we'll send these newsletters a bit more frequently. For now, the next one is scheduled to arrive in your inbox on Tuesday, June 30.

P.S. Is your email inbox crowded? No worries! Previous issues of the Rochester Ready newsletter, along with other emails from our office, will be available on our website shortly after they send.

Let's chat about academic advising.

As an incoming student, your academic advising and first-semester course registration will take place over the summer. Incoming transfer and exchange students will register as soon as they've met with their advisor, and first-year students will register on Tuesday, August 4 and Wednesday, August 5. Here's what to do to make sure you get the most out of your academic advising experience:

Review the New Student Academic Guide. This online guide to academic advising, the Rochester Curriculum, and course registration will walk you through all of the steps of the summer advising process.

Attend this morning's required academic advising and course registration webinar (or watch the recording). This webinar will detail the new student academic advising process, as well as the Rochester Curriculum, advice on what courses to take, and how to register for your first semester courses. Advance registration is required to join the Zoom webinar.

❑ Complete your writing self-placement survey by Monday, June 22. This placement exam, found in Blackboard, is required for all incoming students to help you figure out the best course(s) to take to fulfill your primary writing requirement.

Request any academic disability accommodations you may need. If you are interested in accessing disability accommodations, exploring eligibility, or just identifying as a student with a disability, you encourage you to register with Disability Resources now to make sure you're ready for your first semester.

❑ Consider an exploratory course. As you're preparing to connect with your advisor, make sure to review the seminar courses offered exclusively for new first-year students. From design thinking to leadership skills, these one and two-credit courses allow you explore various interests and learn more about the opportunities available to you as a URochester student:
  • CASC 104: Designing Your Life
  • CASC 142: Strategies for Academic Success
  • CASC 145: Navigating the Academy
  • CASC 170: International Student Success Seminar
  • CASC 350: Rising Leader Class (requires an application that's due June 21)
Are you an incoming exchange student? Most of these tasks only apply to incoming degree-seeking students. Your academic tasks, along with everything else you need to know ahead of your semester abroad, can be found on our website.

Have you started your online orientation program yet?

The Rochester Ready online orientation program is ready for you! If you haven't already, make sure to review our website to find all the tasks you need to complete before Saturday, August 21

We've designed the program so you can complete the required tasks at your own pace (with a few exceptions), but please make every effort to attend the required live webinars so you can ask questions and connect with URochester staff.
Confused about the different platforms and logins needed to complete the Rochester Ready program? We've got you covered! Our website details each system you'll use as an incoming student and how to log in.

You and your family are invited!

Join fellow incoming students, along with current students, families, and University alumni, at virtual and in-person Welcome Celebrations, presented by the Office of Alumni Relations and Constituent Engagement and the Parents Program. Beginning this month, these events run throughout the summer and include exclusive opportunities for parents and families to connect.

Add these dates to your calendar.
We know there are a lot of dates to remember, so we'll include this section in each issue to highlight important upcoming event dates and deadlines from the new student checklist and timeline pages on our website.
