Dear Sunday Sparker,

I feel deeply grateful, almost dancingly so,  every time I talk about the blessings of time in June.

Here are 10 things I am grateful for:

  1. Longer mornings at my desk starting this week.
  2. No homework preparation on Sunday morning for my kids to do while I am at work anymore.
  3. A drastically shorter commute in the morning, all three reasons above are due to not driving my kids to school. I know it seems like a bus is the solution, but it's not an option right now, and that is a story for another day.
  4. No going in circles between my kids’ rooms to wake them up from their deep slumber while simultaneously trying to have my rice cake with boiled egg slices and Avocado breakfast.
  5. No rush evenings and long commutes to pick up the kids from my parents’ after school by my husband and me (we take turns here, and yes, their after-school bus goes as far as my parents’ house, that’s it).
  6. I can run errands after work without worrying about being late.
  7. Coming home earlier and having no homework means we all have more time in the evening to enjoy the great outdoors and the nice summer weather.
  8. Now we get to have two family days a week: Friday and Saturday, not just Friday.
  9. Basil will spend more time with his siblings; less guilt for me when I am at work.
  10. A quieter WhatsApp. No FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) on mums’ group chats.

There are a few things I could lose, however, when my kids are off and I need to plan for them.

You see, I insist on driving the kids to school every day (except Saturdays) because there is a perk I have not admitted, even to my husband; they force me to arrive early to work. Yes, they are my commitment device! I don’t lose personal morning leaves due to delays, as I did many times on Sundays when I didn't drive them (their day off). And arriving early also means I can keep up my precious writing habit.

I want to keep this habit because I prefer to do podcast-related work as part of my morning routine at home. This means setting up new rules:

If I want to arrive at work at 8 am, I need to leave home at 7:30 am, so my morning routine needs to end at 6:45 am, which is a significant increase compared to the current 6:15 am average from Monday to Thursday. Then, I enjoy my breakfast, get dressed, and put on my makeup at home, not in the car. This is easier if I choose my outfit and accessories the day before. Given the shorter commute, I arrive early and get to commit to my writing practice before work starts.

Writing this post is my way of creating public accountability!
I'll commit to this for three weeks, as July would be a different story with late bedtime. Would you hold me accountable and ask me about it now and then?

I am excited to try the summer version of my morning routine.

What about you?

Can you list 10 things you are grateful for today? Whether it is school or non-school-related, try it! Lists are fun.

What might you need to change about your routines, even if temporarily like me, to enjoy the soon-expiring gift of time?

 3. 💬 Quote of the week:

"Small steps lead to good feelings lead to small steps: the virtuous circle strengthens and rises. A Practice is a commitment to process over outcome, a commitment to taking small steps forward with the purpose of collecting feedback and learning. It’s an Experiment + persistence."
