For the last few years on and off, I've been helping my sister market her art business online and in-person. Through her, I've met plenty of independent artists trying to sell their work while holding down a full-time job, or trying to create while also making time to market.

What I've learned from working both with creatives and in a more corporate marketing agency, is that generic marketing advice doesn't work for artists.

Many of the blogs, articles, social media channels and YouTube videos preaching about ‘X things you need to be doing to market your business’ won't be applicable to selling art work.

Why? Because selling art is more complex than selling a hoover, or a dress, or a greetings card. You're not addressing a fundamental need or pain point, you're trying to connect to someone's humanness through your creations and hoping they invest in that connection.

In my most recent guide ‘How to market your art the slow and sustainable way’ I talk you through how you can start to think about marketing your art in a way that better suits your potential customers interests and desires.

Some of the key things I get you to think about, as we slowly build a more achievable and less demanding marketing strategy, are:
  • How you can get clear about who it is you're talking to in your marketing and why they might be the ones that will buy your work.
  • Where you might like to spend more of your time within your marketing, when it comes to choosing marketing platforms and channels.
  • How you can create a clear and simple marketing plan, that doesn't drain your energy or creativity and allows you to spend more of your time on what you love most, creating.
  • How you can audit your sales channels so you can remove any obstacles that might make it difficult for people to buy from you or work with you.
At the end of the guide, I also offer a free Google Doc that you can use to work into these areas, helping you create a one-page (give or take) marketing plan that makes your marketing feel so much easier and less like a chore.
