Hello First name / lovely subscribers!

I originally planned to chat about AI in this newsletter. I have a lot of mixed feelings about it, but today, the last thing I want to do is talk about AI! It's everywhere, and honestly, I'm just tired of the rhetoric lately. 😅

So instead, I want to talk about how I've been feeling in business lately, because I think it's relatable.

It's been a difficult few weeks. For almost all of May, things were quiet, and at first that was welcome. I'd been busy, and quiet stretches usually feel exciting to me. I have more time to work on personal projects like finally having the time to build my mini course. It was nice to leave my desk a little early instead of sitting there all day.

But this quiet stretch went on longer than usual. By the last two weeks of May, I was getting squirrely. I'd sit at my desk and freeze, not really knowing what to work on, even when there were things I could've been doing. I kept checking my inbox, finding crickets, and slowly slipping into a scarcity mindset, which really isn't like me. Honestly, it's the first time since I started working for myself that things have felt genuinely nervewracking.

I think a lot of you can relate. I've heard other website designers and developers saying the same thing, especially since the start of this year. AI is part of it, sure, but I think it's more than that. The economy feels unstable, and people are more cautious about where they spend their money (I know I am!). I just hadn't felt that ripple in my own business until recently.

When I noticed myself spiralling into negative thinking, I had to have a little chat with myself. Lean into abundance and P.M.A. (If you don't know what that means, it's "positive mental attitude," which I picked up from the hardcore punk scene.) If you're feeling this way too, you're not alone!

I started to get back on my normal path of thinking positively, leaning into abundance, and showing up. Keep showing up and doing the work, it pays off. I've always thought of it like a snowball rolling down a hill, it keeps getting larger and larger as it goes.

Lately, things have been picking back up, and it's starting to feel better already. That snowball's gaining a little momentum again. I don't have all the answers, but I think it's worth talking about, and worth knowing you're not alone in it. ❤️

How we can work together

Things are picking back up for me now, but I know not everyone's there yet. So I wanted to share something that might help if you're still in that quieter stretch. Something I don't advertise too much is that I don't just do full website builds, I also take on smaller scoped work. Sometimes it's helping a designer with some coding items. Sometimes it's a business owner who already has a site and needs help working through a problem or adding a new feature in like a membership.

If you've been wanting to work with a developer but aren't quite ready for a full build right now, just know it doesn't have to be all-or-nothing for us to work together. It could be something smaller, like cleaning up your mobile view, or just getting your site over the finish line. Reach out and I'll let you know what makes the most sense for what you need.

New Squarespace Features

Scheduling blocks on 7.1 sites now automatically use the section's colour theme.

Audio blocks have been updated to match other blocks as well as the design and metadata sections have been updated.

New reserved cart & countdown timer (coming next week): you will be able to add a reserved cart & countdown timer to ecommerce sites. This feature temporarily holds inventory for visitors when they add eligible items to their cart, incentivizing them to purchase. For example the user has 10 minutes to make the purchase once items are in their cart.

Currently…

I wanted to end on a light note to keep things fun and positive! 💃

What I’m watching: America’s Sweethearts (obsessed), The Hunting Wives (late to this, but omg it’s crazy), House of the Dragon (eek so excited for the new season!)

What I’m reading: Yesteryear

What I’m listening to: Good Hang (podcast) and Blink-182 (I need things light and fun right now!)

What I’m doing outside of work: Cross stitching is my favourite hobby. Keeps me off my phone, keeps my mind from wandering, and I get to make fun gifts for friends and family out of it!

Cheers,
Erin
