Healed by Grace"

When people walk through the doors of a counseling ministry, they are usually carrying something heavy. I often think of it as a backpack that is packed with things like anxiety, fractured relationships, old wounds, and a desperate desire for things to be different. As counselors, we lean in, listen deeply, and offer the best tools we have. But if we are being completely honest, the tools aren't the cure. From my perspective, they were never meant to be. In Christian counseling, we are privy to a beautiful, humbling secret: we are not the agents of change, and neither is the client’s sheer willpower. The true heavy lifting happens through the grace of God.

It is easy to fall into the trap of viewing therapy as a self-help project or a place where you put in the work, check the boxes, and fix yourself. But real, lasting transformation isn't a DIY project. We must remind ourselves that God is the true Healer. Scripture reminds us that while we can plant and water the seeds, it is God who makes things grow (1 Corinthians 3:6). He is the one operating behind the scenes, softening hearts, untangling long-held fears, and replacing shame with peace. In this light, the counseling room becomes a sacred space. It’s a place where we invite the Holy Spirit to do what no human mechanism can: create a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us.

The most beautiful thing about bringing God into the counseling process is the sheer amount of grace available. In 2 Corinthians 12:9 God reminds us that His grace is sufficient for us and His power is made perfect in our weakness. Healing is rarely linear or a perfect straight line. There are messy weeks, and there are setbacks. There are moments when old protective habits scream louder than new growth. In a purely worldly framework, a setback can feel like a failure. But in a grace-centered framework, a setback is just another place for God to meet us. There is grace for the pace of your healing. Grace for the days you feel stuck. Grace for the messy, unpolished versions of ourselves that we try so hard to hide from the world. I’m writing this to encourage you to not hide that part of you from your walk with God.

If you are currently on a counseling journey, or considering starting one, take a deep breath. You do not have to figure this all out by next week. You do not have to "fix" yourself before you are worthy of peace. If we could fix ourselves, the transformation would not be a reflection of our Creator. Our job in the counseling room is simply to show up, be honest, and surrender the broken pieces. We do the vulnerable work of showing our wounds, and we trust the True Counselor to bind them up. There is so much grace for you here.

Blessings,
