Hi First name / there, Welcome to this edition of Bree’s Barron River Bulletin, keeping you up to date with the latest news and events across our region. Last month’s Budget Week was an important one for our region, and I was proud to be part of delivering funding that will make a real difference here at home in Far North Queensland. From supporting local jobs to investing in the future of our community, these announcements are about making sure our region continues to grow and thrive in the years ahead. What I’ve enjoyed most, though, is getting back out into the community and seeing that local spirit firsthand. From cheering on competitors at the Cairns Ironman, to celebrating Queensland Day and attending the Rural Doctors Association of Queensland Gala and Consecration of St Johns Church, it’s been a wonderful few weeks connecting with so many familiar faces. Double Island is set for a major revival. With Morris Group announced as the successful leaseholder, a $40 million plan will bring the island back to life, restoring access for locals while creating a relaxed, welcoming destination with new public facilities. The vision includes a beach bar, restaurant, and visitor spaces which will be open to locals. Just as importantly, it ensures this much-loved part of our coastline is no longer out of reach, but once again a place our community can enjoy. This investment is also a major win for tourism and the local economy, with Morris Group’s proven track record helping elevate Tropical North Queensland’s offering through high-quality, experience-driven destinations. Plans for a luxury lodge, wellness facilities and improved connectivity will attract visitors while supporting local jobs, businesses and long-term growth. For me, this is about more than development, it’s about restoring pride in a place that means so much to our community and creating a future for Double Island that balances world-class experiences with genuine community access. Best of all, owned by a North Queensland company. |

Queensland State Budget was delivered, and I wanted to share what it means for our communities across Far North Queensland. I have shared my budget email last week which you can view here. Here is a brief summary of what this budget delivers for our region. - Electricity: Power prices set to fall by 7–10% for typical households and businesses, with vulnerable households receiving an indexed $399 rebate.
- Transport: 50 cent bus fares made permanent and enshrined in law.
- Cost of Living Relief: $150 Back to School Boost for primary students, $200 Play On! sports vouchers, and increased fuel subsidy to 45c/km for regional patients needing to travel for healthcare.
- Safer Communities: Continued progress on the Woodford Youth Detention Centre (112 beds, first stage by 2027) and $2.387 billion investment to expand adult prison capacity across Queensland.
- Police & Justice Investment: Funding for POLAIR helicopter operations, $19.3 million Cairns Courthouse upgrade, plus more police and youth justice support programs.
- Cairns Airport Bus Service: Delivered in the budget to improve transport options for locals and visitors.
- Ryan Weare Park Pathway: Long-awaited shared pathway connecting Redlynch, Freshwater and Brinsmead for safer walking and cycling.
- Cairns Western Arterial Road (CWAR): Fully funded and progressing, including the Barron River Bridge, with delivery fast-tracked ahead of the 2032 Olympics.
- Major Road Upgrades: Investment in Kuranda Range safety works, Kennedy Highway upgrades, Captain Cook Highway reconstruction and more across the region.
- Local Schools Investment: Upgrades across Barron River schools, including new facilities at Kuranda District State School and Freshwater State School to support modern learning environments.
- Record Health Investment: $1 billion investment in Cairns Hospital, including upgrades to the emergency call centre and transit lounge.
- Barlow Park Upgrades: Supporting major events, increased sporting participation and the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
- Cairns Convention Centre: Capital upgrades to modernise facilities and replace essential infrastructure.
- Tourism Investment: Funding to attract more flights to Cairns, plus upgrades to Smithfield Mountain Bike Park, Wangetti Trail (Stage 2) and other key tourism assets.
- Environment & Wildlife: New Turtle Rehabilitation Centre on Green Island to support conservation efforts.
- Community Infrastructure: Upgrades to Machans Beach Community Hall, Stratford Bowls Club, and community halls across Holloways Beach, Yorkeys Knob, Kuranda and Koah, recognising their importance, especially after Cyclone Jasper.
I believe that this is a budget for the regions. We know the Capital will always have more investment, however it’s wonderful to see record investment in the regions. |

Far North Queensland is set to benefit from major new investment across both tourism infrastructure and events, strengthening the region’s appeal and supporting long-term growth. Through the Queensland Government’s Tourism Icons Investment Fund, $4 million has been committed to the Reef Magic IV project, delivering a new high-speed 32-metre catamaran to improve access to the Great Barrier Reef and enhance visitor experiences. At the same time, $124,000 in funding through the Homegrown Destination Event Fund will support four regional events, including Run Port Douglas, as part of a broader statewide investment under Destination 2045. Together, these investments represent a strong commitment to growing tourism, increasing visitation and ensuring Far North Queensland remains one of Australia’s premier destinations. |

Sporting Club Shout Out: Cairns City Lions |

A big congratulations to the Cairns City Lions for hosting a fantastic Women’s Day event. It was a wonderful celebration of community, connection, and support for women in sport. Adding to the celebrations, the club has also been successful in securing funding through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, which will go towards important upgrades to their clubhouse.
