Pelvic floor symptoms are extremely common in midlife, yet many women are surprised to learn that a specialty exists specifically to treat them. Concerns such as urinary leakage, pelvic pressure, or bladder urgency are often assumed to be a normal part of aging. In reality, these conditions fall within the field of urogynecology and many are highly treatable. This week, we are pleased to introduce Dr. Alexandra Tabakin, a fellowship-trained urogynecologist practicing in Central New Jersey. |

Q: Many women do not realize urogynecology exists until they are already struggling with symptoms. In your experience, what typically brings midlife women to seek care with a urologist or urogynecologist? What complaints or concerns do you hear most often? A: So many women struggle with pelvic floor disorders, which can occur at any stage of life but most commonly in midlife. Women coming to the office are often experiencing urinary incontinence (leakage of urine), pelvic organ prolapse (also known as a dropped bladder or uterus), overactive bladder (urinary urgency, frequency), vaginal masses, recurrent UTIs, and many more. |
|
Q: Many women adapt their lives around urinary symptoms or pelvic pressure, sometimes for years. What proactive steps or small daily habits do you recommend before symptoms become severe? A: Urinary and pelvic symptoms like pressure can indicate a number of treatable conditions, all with different prevention/treatment strategies. There is no one-size-fits-all recommendation. If you are experiencing any bothersome symptoms, I recommend evaluation with a urogynecologist for a personalized treatment plan.
Q: Menopause and aging can affect bladder function and pelvic support, but many women assume these changes are “just normal.” How do you help patients differentiate between natural changes and treatable conditions? A: While many symptoms women experience may be related to aging, they can still be bothersome and are often treatable. Because most pelvic floor conditions are not life threatening, we treat patients based on their degree of bother and what their treatment goals are.

Q: If you could offer one piece of practical reassurance to a woman who has been avoiding care, what would it be? A: If you are suffering from urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, or other pelvic floor conditions, please know that you are not alone and help is available to improve your quality of life. Make an appointment with a urogynecologist or pelvic health specialist to learn about the options available. |
