Dear First name / Great Neighbor,
July has arrived and the dog days of summer are here. With dangerous temperatures these next few days, please check in on the newcomer neighbors you know. There are many
cooling centers throughout the city. Additionally, both the
Charlottesville City and
Albemarle County Public Schools are offering summer meals throughout July to any child 18 and younger.
In a few days, we'll mark our nation's 250th anniversary at the annual Monticello Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony! The keynote speaker this year will be Governor Abigail Spanberger and more than 70 people will become American citizens. The free event has reached capacity but will be
livestreamed. Happy Independence Day to all!
We hope you'll make plans to join us for our first International Neighbors book club for adults and teens on July 21st! We are reading We Are Displaced, a collection of stories collected and written by Malala Yousafzai. We'll be meeting to discuss the book on Tuesday, July 21st from 6:30-8pm and will hear from Buki, a refugee from Kosovo with a truly remarkable story. Register below.
Though the summer season is quieter in our office, we are still ever working on behalf of those we serve, and the volunteers and community partners who support the newcomer community. Thank you for this privilege.
Have a wonderful July!
