If you're new to SEO or have no idea what it is and just know everyone talks about it all the time, here is a really basic, simplified explanation:

 

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and refers to making sure your website, or these days pretty much any content you upload online, can easily be found and indexed by search engines like Google.

 

Think of search engines as librarians. Their job is to scour the internet and catalogue every tiny piece of information and sort it by relevance. People who use search engines, like you and me, will type in vague descriptions of what we're looking for. Then, the search engine librarians have to sort through all their resources and produce the best sources of information that pertains to that users search.  

 

 

If your work is highly commercial, such as portrait commissions, artwork for businesses or work that targets a very specific niche, then SEO will work great for you. Even more so if you want to actively target a local audience e.g. people looking for Pet Portraits in X location. 

 

If your art business is more abstract, for example you paint what you want to and hope someone wants to buy it, SEO may not be the strongest marketing channel for you, instead you might opt for a channel that is more visual, something that is going to let the work speak for itself.
