Hey wild one,

Lately I’ve been thinking about the difference between liking something and recognizing yourself in it.

A photograph. A room lit by candlelight. A woman with a book open beside her. Wet leaves. Dark wood. Salt air. A table full of food that took its time.

Sometimes you see an image and it feels less like inspiration and more like a memory from a life you have not yet lived. I have been trying to pay attention to those things.

Not because I think I can wake up tomorrow with a finished house, a perfectly edited wardrobe, endless time, and a life that looks effortlessly beautiful from every angle. I cannot. Most days are still work, laundry, school plans, dinner, dogs, and trying to remember what I walked into the room for.

But I do think there is something worth protecting in the things that make us feel more awake.

A good book. A long walk under trees. Food worth sitting down for. A room that feels a little more like your own. A song that changes the air in the car. The small, stubborn decisions that say: this life belongs to me too. So this week, I’m collecting a few of those things.

This week is apparently brought to you by smoke, peaches, lime, and the general belief that dinner should occasionally feel like an event.

First: the smoked barbacoa tacos. These were absurdly good… tender, smoky shredded beef piled into charred tortillas with pickled red onions, lime, and whatever else you want to throw at them. The kind of meal that makes everyone go quiet for a second after the first bite.

I also made a fresh peach margarita that tastes like actual peaches, not fluorescent syrup and regret. It’s bright, tart, a little sweet, and dangerously easy to drink outside while pretending you have nowhere else to be.

And because summer corn is too good to waste on boiling water, I’m working on smoked corn on the cob with chili-lime butter: charred edges, melted butter, lime, a little heat, a little salt. The sort of side dish that has no business stealing the entire meal, but probably will.

My reading tastes have changed so much lately. I want atmosphere. Women who are angry for good reason. Stories that are unsettling because the world around them is more frightening than any monster.

July has settled in heavy and electric here, the kind of heat that makes the whole day feel slow until the sky finally splits open.

I love that brief moment after a thunderstorm, when the air changes. Rain dripping from oak leaves. The grass gone dark and shining. Everything smelling like wet earth and hot pavement. Somewhere nearby, smoke rising from a fire as if the evening has decided to begin again.

It’s the part of summer I want to remember: not just bright pool days and peaches on the counter, but the low rumble of thunder, the windows open after rain, the trees moving in the wind, and that strange relief when the heat finally breaks.

There’s something about a July storm that makes the world feel a little wilder and somehow more alive.

Remember, you do not need to have arrived to begin making a life that feels like yours.
