Shared Waters
A newsletter for the ministry partners of Camp Onomia

Hello Partners in Ministry,

One of the great joys of my work is helping shape the Lutheran Outdoor Ministries annual curriculum. Because of that, I have been living with the shared theme of the ELCA Youth Gathering, Imagine More, for quite some time.

As someone who loves dreaming big, this theme has already found its way into the heart of our planning for 2027. At Camp Onomia, we are imagining more than a summer schedule. We are imagining deeper partnerships, stronger congregations, more opportunities for faith formation, and new ways to support children, youth, families, and adults throughout the year.
But imagining more is not something we do alone. It is something we do together.

As you look through this newsletter, you'll find opportunities to help shape the future of camp ministry. We invite you to complete our Summer 2027 Ministry Partner Survey, which will help guide program development as we seek to serve your congregation and community in meaningful ways. We are exploring new intergenerational experiences, flexible participation options for today's families, expanded leadership opportunities for youth, and fresh ways to widen the circle around the campfire.

You'll also find information about our upcoming Quilt Auction, fall ministry opportunities, Camp Sundays, and a sneak peek at the growing possibilities of Onomia on the Road. Together, we can create more opportunities for people to encounter Christ, build community, and discover their place in God's story.

Thank you for being an essential partner in this ministry. We can't wait to imagine more with you.

Grace and peace,
Deacon Stephanie Engel
Executive Director

Imagine More... Summer 2027 Starts with Your Feedback
As we continue to imagine what God has in store for Camp Onomia, we're beginning to dream about Summer 2027. Rather than waiting until plans are finalized, we'd love to invite you into the conversation.

Below is a draft of what Summer 2027 could look like. These ideas are meant to spark conversation, not announce a final schedule. As a ministry leader, you know the parents, grandparents, and caregivers in your congregation better than anyone. We encourage you to share these ideas, ask what excites them, and let us know what would best serve your community.

Draft Summer 2027 Schedule
Week 1 – All People Camp
An intergenerational camp experience where congregations come together for faith formation. Adults, youth, and children would each have age-specific experiences alongside shared worship and activities. Youth counselors would lead overnight programming for children and youth, while also creating space for congregation members to connect with one another.

Week 2 – STEAM Camp
Campers choose from Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math experiences through hands-on adventures. Families could choose a half-week or full-week option, giving campers flexibility based on interests and readiness.

Week 3 – Family Flex Week: Come As You Are
Designed especially for the week following the ELCA Youth Gathering & 4th of July, this relaxed family camp allows families to choose how long they stay while enjoying meals, fellowship, and optional programming.

Week 4 – Night Camp
Our popular Night Owls and Hawks programs continue for middle and high school youth with even more opportunities for evening adventures, faith, and community.

Week 5 – Grandparent Camp
One of Onomia's most beloved traditions, offering grandparents and grandchildren time to grow in faith and create lasting memories together.

Week 6 – Family Camp
Choose a weekend, a full week, or both! Families build the experience that fits their schedule while enjoying meals, worship, recreation, and camp traditions together.

Week 7 – Classic Camp
The classic Camp Onomia experience for elementary campers, with both half-week and full-week options full of outdoor adventure, friendships, and faith formation.

Summer Leadership Opportunities:
Counselor in Training (CIT) Leadership Program
Level 1 (2 Weeks): A discounted leadership experience for high school students focusing on teamwork, problem-solving, worship leadership, and service—perfect preparation for experiences like the ELCA Youth Gathering or LYO.

Level 2 (4 Weeks): An application-based advanced leadership program for upperclassmen. Participants receive a weekly snack canteen stipend while gaining hands-on leadership experience and preparing for future summer staff opportunities.

Beyond Overnight Camp:
Onomia Offsite Day Camps – Our summer staff partner with your congregation to bring the camp experience directly to your community.

Pop-Up Explore Days – Day-long adventures for preschool through third-grade children and their adults. Attend one or several themed days throughout the summer.

We'd Love Your Feedback
Please take a few minutes to complete our Summer 2027 Feedback Survey. Even better, use this draft to start conversations with the parents, grandparents, and families in your congregation before responding.

The survey will remain open through September 15, giving you time to gather feedback from the people who will ultimately be making camp decisions for their families.

Together, let's imagine more for Summer 2027.

Imagine More Generosity: Join Us for Quilt Auction Weekend!
Camp Onomia’s Annual Quilt Auction Weekend is more than an auction, it’s a celebration of community, generosity, and the ministry we share together. Join us September 18–20 for a weekend filled with fellowship, Bingo Night, a Silent Auction, delicious food, and Sunday Worship with Bethany Lutheran Church of Onamia.

As we continue to provide life-changing outdoor ministry experiences for children, youth, families, and adults, your congregation plays an important role. Rising costs impact ministries and families alike, and your support helps ensure that every camper has the opportunity to experience Camp Onomia, regardless of financial circumstances.

There are many ways to participate:
  • Invite your congregation and share our promotional materials
  • Join us for a fun weekend at camp
  • Donate a Silent Auction item such as a gift basket, handmade item, experience, service, or gift card
  • Take up a special offering to support the event
  • Pray for the volunteers, donors, and campers impacted by this ministry
Thank you for being a partner in ministry and helping create places where people discover who they are in Christ, Community, and Creation. We can’t wait to celebrate with you at Quilt Auction Weekend!

Imagine More Connections with Onomia

Thanks to a generous grant, Camp Onomia is excited to expand our ability to connect with you throughout the school year! In the coming months, we’ll be sharing more ways that Onomia can support your congregation through ministry resources, consultation, visits, and opportunities to bring camp into your community.

We believe camp is more than a summer experience; it is a year-round partner in faith formation, relationship building, and creating spaces where people encounter God and one another.

Stay tuned for more details! In the meantime, you can invite Onomia into your congregation by booking a Camp Sunday with our talented staff or exploring resources to help your congregation stay connected and invite others into the ministry of Camp Onomia.
