Hello Foodie Friends… 👋🏼

It's great to speak to you again, hopefully you enjoyed last week's World Chocolate Day inspo of recipes and managed to get into the kitchen to celebrate. We have been glued to the screen watching the World Cup, sadly the Socceroos didn't make it through suffering the heartbreak of a penalty shootout. Daz is of course keeping an eye on England but this week it is all about the French. They are looking good for the cup but of course that's not the only thing they are good at, food of course is number one at the top of French pride, and with Bastille Day around the corner (14th July), we thought we would pepper you with some classic French dish inspo from our archives.

As you might have guessed we love all of the different cuisines and food cultures here at SK, but French food is definitely one that we j'adore! Daz trained in classic French cuisine, and worked in France in his early days, and Cat spent time working for French chefs so it is something we are both passionate about. So many of the worlds greatest dishes, techniques and flavours originated in France, that it feels right we should spend a day celebrating the French and their importance to the food landscape.

Voila! Here are some French fancies in the shape of ideas, recipes and inspo for you to digest.

Bon appetit, Cat & Daz xx

Bastille Day: What Are We Actually Celebrating ?

Every July 14th, France throws its biggest annual party. While popular culture links it directly to the bloody storming of the Bastille, the holiday officially commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération—a massive event that united the country and birthed the republic's core symbols.

The Spark: July 14, 1789
Under the crumbling rule of King Louis XVI, Paris was a powder keg of poverty and political fury. On that fateful morning, an angry mob marched on the Bastille—a royal fortress and prison that symbolized the monarchy's absolute tyranny.

The Impact: Taking the fortress was the first major victory against the Ancien Régime. It triggered a chaotic revolution, the eventual execution of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette in 1793, and the definitive end of French royalty.
The Legacy: Out of the smoke came the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, paving the way for legal equality, fundamental liberties, and modern secularism.

Icons of the Republic
The Revolution didn't just change the government; it created a brand-new cultural identity. The most enduring symbols include:
🇫🇷 The Motto: Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity).
🇫🇷 The Anthem: La Marseillaise, a revolutionary battle cry officially adopted in 1879.
🇫🇷 The Tricolour Flag: Blue and red (the colors of Paris) sandwiching white (the color of the monarchy).
