21 EVERY DAYS

WEEK 2 | EMBRACING THE DAY

Sometimes it's on those very mundane and ordinary days that we can find the most inspiration and push ourselves to think outside the box!

One of my favorite sections from a past project was on a day just like that--I had spent most of the day working remotely at my day job, it was too hot to do anything outside, and I was stumped on what I could make! The prompt I had was movement. I walked all around the Airbnb I was staying at to find something, anything!

Then I noticed my car parked on the driveway…and thought about how the movement of the tires had taken me to so may places! I took a rubbing of the tires with crayon, cut it into circles, then layered the circles and cut it to fit my section. (Photo at the end of this email if you'd like to see it :)) It really amazed me how inspiration could really be found anywhere and at anytime--sometimes we just have to look a little bit closer.

This week I'd like for us to focus on different parts of our days and see what comes up--especially when it's routine, busy, boring. What will we see if we stop to notice? How can we be inspired and embrace what we do on a daily basis? What potential novelty is waiting for us? I hope these prompts provide a starting point and help us get curious about the every day things we normally brush past.

The prompts from this season will be different from the last. If you'd like to use the same prompts from season 1, you can find all the prompts here.

If you'd like a prompt that's similar but not exactly the same, I suggest typing season 1's prompts into the thesaurus so you're following the same theme as before but picking a new word to spark different ideas!

DAILY PROMPTS FOR THE WEEK

Sunday | Day 8
MORNING
“Every morning is a small miracle —
notice it, breathe it, become it.”
Amelia Hart
~
Find inspiration in the beginning of your day: waking up, your morning routine, having tea or coffee, going to brunch. Are you an early bird? Or maybe your section will reflect that you're not a morning person :) Consider the feelings, words, and activities you associate this time frame with.

Monday | Day 9
UP
“When you look at the stars and the galaxy, you feel that you are not just from any particular piece of land, but from the solar system.”
Kalpana Chawla
~
Today focus on looking up: at the clouds and the sky, trees and birds, airplanes and the moon, the ceiling and light fixtures, buildings and bridges, cabinets and shelves up top. What do you notice, what do you find?

Tuesday | Day 10
AFTERNOON
“It is the still, yellow kind of afternoon
when one is apt to get stuck in a dream if one sits very quiet.”
Dodie Smith
~
What happens in your day between noon and around 7 or 8PM? How do you feel? What's happening around you? If your schedule varies and you don't have a set routine, embrace that and find inspiration there. You can also consider what you would do if you could do anything you wanted during these hours.

Wednesday | Day 11
DOWN
"Just yesterday I watched an ant crossing a path,
through the tumbled pine needles she toiled.
And I thought: she will never live another life but this one.
And I thought: if she lives her life with all her strength
is she not wonderful and wise?
And I continued this up the miraculous pyramid of everything
until I came to myself."
Mary Oliver, excerpt from Reckless Poem
~
There is life and awe and wonder all around us--even on the ground we lay our feet upon. Today focus on looking down at things--maybe even kneeling or crouching to get a closer look at something low. What are the ants or other critters doing? What kind of rug, flooring, tile, grass, are you walking on? Are there interesting cracks in the sidewalk or chalk art or little flowers growing through the asphalt? What does the top of your dog, cat, kiddo look like? Get a bird's eye view by standing at the top of the stairs, balcony, rooftop deck.

Thursday | Day 12
EVENING
“How magnificent the city is by the June moonlight!
— after the streets are empty and silent.”
Byron Caldwell Smith (1849–1877), letter to Kate Stephens (1853–1938)
~
How are your evenings like, from around 8PM to midnight or sunrise? What are the nights like this time of year? Do fireflies come out or are the skies moody with rain-filled clouds? What are the colors you associate with nighttime? How can you represent evening in your section?

Friday | Day 13
REST
“The art of resting is an essential part of creativity.”
Unknown
~
It's the end of the week! How do you rest and recharge? What brings you calm and helps you feel grounded? Or is Friday the start of lots of activities and plans? Can you take 5 or 10 minutes for yourself, to close your eyes, to clear your mind?

Saturday | Day 14
PLAY
"We don't stop playing because we grow old;
We grow old because we stop playing."
George Bernard Shaw
~
What does play look like for you and how do you incorporate it into your days? How does the time of year affect this, what is play like during this season of your life? Have fun filling in your section today!

PS: Here's my tire rubbing section! It might not be a masterpiece but it reminds me of how we can make something out of what feels like nothing and that feels pretty special :)
