Ciao!
A client recently asked me about the process for claiming VAT refunds on purchases in Italy, and I realized this is a topic perfect for the newsletter. So here's the 4-1-1.
First, what is VAT? It's Value Added Tax (essentially a sales tax), and in Italy it's 22%. It's automatically added to most purchases and is already included in the price you see and pay.
Purchases over approximately €155 (the threshold can vary slightly by store and region) qualify for VAT refunds, but only if you're a non-EU resident. If you're American, Canadian, Australian, or from most countries outside Europe, you're eligible.
If you are an EU citizen, no refund for you.
Here's how it works:
When you make a purchase that qualifies, ask the shop for a "tax-free form" (they should offer it automatically, but don't assume). You'll need to show your passport. This is non-negotiable, so keep it handy if you're planning on doing some shopping shopping. They'll fill out the paperwork right there, which typically includes your name, passport number, and purchase details.
Keep everything together: the receipt, the tax-free form, and the item. At the airport, before you check your bags, head to the VAT refund desk indicated on your paperwork (usually located near the check-in counters). They'll verify your paperwork, inspect the item if needed, and process your refund. You can typically get the money back immediately via credit card or cash, depending on the service.
Note: Don't pack that expensive purchase in your checked luggage. You may be asked to show that it. But even more importantly, if your bag is lost, so is your new purchase. Don't stress yourself out like that!
