This Friday: Tell Governor Newsom: No 11th Hour Attack on Eaton Fire Survivors' Edison Payouts

Before another last-minute deal is done, we’re asking survivors and allies to stand together.

Dear Friends,
Last year, in the final two days of the legislative session, Governor Newsom gutted a consumer protection bill, stripped out its original contents, and replaced it with 231 pages of new language protecting California's three investor-owned electric utilities, whose equipment has repeatedly sparked catastrophic wildfires.

The amendments arrived so late that legislators said they didn't even know what they were voting on. The Los Angeles Times later called the legislation "effectively a bailout."

Now Governor Newsom is at it again.

According to a scoop in this week's Los Angeles Times, Governor Newsom's office and legislative leaders are once again negotiating wildfire legislation behind closed doors. The proposals reportedly include limiting what victims can recover from fires caused by California's three electric monopolies.

If enacted, those changes would reduce what Edison pays Eaton Fire families for the destruction of our homes, our businesses, and our lives.

That's not democracy.

If these proposals are good for California, introduce them in public. Let survivors, legislators, and the public debate them. Don't rewrite California's wildfire liability laws through another 11th hour backroom deal.

This may be our last chance to stop it.

Join us this Friday as we tell Governor Newsom:
Choose democracy over corporate special interests.
Protect survivors. Not the perpetrators of California's catastrophic fires.

We'll hold a survivor-led press conference and then write postcards urging Governor Newsom to protect survivors, not corporate special interests.

We'll also do something just as important.

We'll be together.

Recovery has been long and lonely. Before we stand in front of the cameras, we'll stand beside one another.

Coffee and pastries are on us. Hugs will be free and free-flowing. ❤️
