The 3-font rule for your on-brand designs
Happy Tuesday!

Last week we got your colors, fonts, and logo loaded into your Canva Brand Kit. This week, we're focusing on one specific piece of that system: your fonts, and the roles each one plays.

The 3-font rule:
  • Heading font — your biggest, boldest font (this is your attention grabber)
  • Subheading font — typically adds a little pizazz between heading and body copy (often a handwriting or script font)
  • Body font — clean and easy to read (this is your workhorse text)
Using your font hierarchy properly in every design you create will not only establish brand recognition, but it will also make your brand feel cohesive instead of chaotic.

My 3 exceptions:
At its most literal, the phrase means that the existence of an exception to a rule shows that a general rule must exist — or that the rule applies in most cases
  1. Collaborations
  2. Announcements
  3. Programs + Events
While it's definitely not necessary to make these or any exceptions in your brand, I find that introducing a new font here and there (with intention) helps to draw attention and keep your marketing lively.

A little confession:
My own fonts actually started shifting months before the rest of my brand refresh went public. I wanted everything to feel cohesive by the time I made the reveal and, honestly, I had just outgrown my original fonts.

Once you know which font plays which role, building a new design gets a lot faster and the end result is 🤩

Tip Tuesday Takeaway:
Three fonts, three jobs — heading, subheading, and body — used the same way in (almost) every design is what makes your brand feel consistent.

If your current templates don't have a clear font hierarchy built in yet, that's something we can set up together.

Until next time,
