Every color in your brand palette has a job

Happy Tuesday!

Last week we broke down your font hierarchy — heading, subheading, and body. This week, we're doing the same thing for your color palette, because most brands only reach for two of their five colors on a regular basis.

I got to put this exact principle into practice recently with my own brand refresh — new logo, new colors, the whole thing, nearly a year in the making. My new palette has names that make me smile every time I use them: Sage Advice, Tangerine Sunset, Bubblegum, Decaf Espresso, Sunbeam, Honeydew, Strawberry Sundae, Morning Fog, and Blank Canvas. Nine colors, each with a clear job to do!

And it's still the same me with the same mission but now I have a palette that expresses how I feel and better represents who I serve.

What every swatch is actually for:
  • Primary — your main color draws the eye and shows up the most
  • Secondary — supports your primary and adds depth without competing with it
  • Accent — used sparingly, for emphasis and calls to action
  • Neutral — gives everything else room to breathe (not just black or white)
Once every color in your palette has a clear role, your designs feel more considered and complete too.

Tip Tuesday Takeaway:
Every color in your palette has a job. Primary draws the eye, secondary supports it, accent creates emphasis, and neutral gives everything room to breathe.

If your palette is missing a clear accent or neutral tone, that's something I can round out for you!

Until next time,
