I originally started using EQ8 to draft my block-based patterns and color them with the exact fabrics I wanted to use in the finished quilt. I love how quickly I can make changes until I’m happy with the fabric selections – before I ever cut into my fabric. That’s some powerful magic (I mean – technology ; )!

 

That alone made it worth the investment and the learning curve. Now, I’m diving a little deeper into the program and exploring parts of it I’ve been ignoring. When the generous folks at Electric Quilt Company invited me to preview a new EQ8 Foundation Paper Piecing course they’ve been developing, I jumped at the opportunity. So … how’d it go?

 

Several of you reached out to me with a question about last week's Quilt Binding Calculation Chart. 

 

The question: Why didn't I add an extra 15 - 20 inches (for joining the ends) to the total inches needed when calculating the yardage amount? 

 

It's because [1] I used 38" (instead of 40" or 42") as the usable amount of fabric in a WOF strip and [2] I always round up to the next full strip (example: 7.25 WOF strips - rounds up to 8 WOF strips). 

 

I find that using this logic, I have plenty of binding for my project, and I always have some left over that I save for a future scrappy binding. I do love a scrappy binding for some projects!
