I have some big news to share! I'm expecting baby girl #3 this October. As the owner and clinical director of a growing practice and the already very busy wife and mom and two, this is equal parts exciting as it is overwhelming. Admittedly, I’ve never run a group practice while on maternity leave so I know there will be growing pains and at the same time, I feel like both me and my incredible, hand-picked team are ready.
Third babies are probably supposed to feel like a walk in the park. Having done this twice already, I should have some sense of what I am doing. In some ways, this is true - I am somewhat of an expert at reigning in the chaos, quelling the anxiety that comes from never knowing what mood my 4 year old is going to wake up in, and I know that while absolutely horrific, I will survive the fourth trimester.
Yet – what is keeping me from falling back asleep at 3am isn’t the idea of labor or being up all night with a newborn, willing the sun to rise. What I’m most fixated on is the well-being of my patients, whom I care deeply about.
I'm a psychologist who spends a good chunk of my professional life helping people tolerate uncertainty, release control, and trust the process. And now I have to do just that: trust that the systems and people I’ve put in place will continue to provide top-notch, expert and specialized care and attention to all of you.
Two new licensed clinical psychologists, both specializing in evidence-based treatment for anxiety, OCD, and eating disorders have joined us: Dr. Journa Njohand Dr. Chase Loveare hitting the ground running this month
Two doctoral student interns,Kasey and Dhruvi, will bring fresh energy and deep training to our practice in September
Ian Ikpeme has transitioned into taking on more of an Operations Manager role, dotting i’s and crossing t’s to ensure nothing slips through the cracks
A new social media coordinator,Reese Owens, is ready to keep our community informed, supported, and connected
Every single one of them, along with our well established clinicians, Dr. Alyssa, Allison, Bailey, and Carla, share our commitment to real, research-backed care. They are warm, skilled, and genuinely passionate about their work. I haven't been hiring to fill seats - I've been looking for people I'd send my own family to.
So, What Does This Mean for You?
For those currently working with me and wondering what continuity of care looks like during my leave, we will talk through everything together and make a plan that feels right for you and your family. Your care matters and I promise I am not disappearing!
For new patients and families looking for support this fall: we are accepting new clients! This is actually a wonderful time to get connected with our practice, and I have full confidence in the team that will meet you there.
One of the things I talk about most with my patients is the discomfort of accepting the illusion of control.
Anxiety loves to convince us that if we just manage, plan, and perfect hard enough, we can prevent bad outcomes.
And when life asks us to let go, even temporarily,
it can feel like falling.
I feel that right now. Not because I don't trust my team (I do, whole heartedly). But because I have poured so much of myself into this practice, into all of you, into my team and supervisees, and into this community. Stepping back, even briefly, asks me to hold two things at once: the joy of what's coming and the grief of temporarily letting go.
If you're a parent who has navigated a major life transition, I'd genuinely love to hear from you. If you're someone who has had to pass the torch at work and felt the identity shift that comes with it, same. Hit reply. Tell me your story.
Along with clinical tips, helpful resources, and research round-ups, this community is about real people doing the hard, beautiful, messy work of living. And I am right there with you.
Thanks for being here. Thank you for trusting us with the things that matter most. I'll be checking in along the way, and I’m looking forward to being back full time in 2027!
With a heart full of gratitude,
-Dr. Ivy Ruths, PhD
