Seven Things
Inspiration, Eating, Listening, Reading, Watching, Making & Working
September 2026

New here? Read this first.
I have had the extremely rare pleasure of being totally alone in this house for the last week. B travelled back to FL to help with some family stuff, but I stayed here.  And it’s been so odd.  I truly didn’t know what to do with myself. Time lost all meaning. I just ate whatever random thing I could create from whatever was in the fridge or the freezer. I stayed up too late. I did crafty stuff. I watched 90s movies. I listened to the tick of the clock. I watched the birds.

B got back on Wednesday, so real life came back, too. But it’s left me realizing that I need to make more time for just me. Because I’m rusty.

So if you need me I’ll be here, taking a moment to check in with myself on a more regular basis, and as always, searching out those…
Small Moments of Joy
  • A day so quiet and uninterrupted I totally lost track of time.
  • Chopping over 18in of hair off my head.
  • The sound the hummingbirds make when they’re competing for the feeder.
  • Organized closets and cabinets.
  • Driving down to Utah and back twice in one week making me realize how much I miss traveling.
  • Having my Mom over for fancy dinner for her birthday.
  • The first truly cold morning of fall.
  • Payton Tolle hugging a runner to tag him out.
  • Still the only salad I feel comfortable eating right now.
  • Eighteen Pound Butterflies
  • Smokey Bear has got the moves
  • Nature’s Sequins
  • Another gorgeously weird gate
  • These plates sit firmly in my Venn diagram of fall celebrations and sports
  • Absolutely NOT. That’s private.
  • The colors of New England.
And lastly, because helping brings joy, too, the World Central Kitchen could use a hand.

Here are the other Seven Things that are helping me keep my chin up these days.  I hope they help you, too, wherever and however you may be:

01 - Inspiration - Actual Color with a photo of the Celect shingle siding from Westlake Royal in a lovely light pink color
Classic, Timeless, but never as simple as they first appear, Patrick Ahern’s homes are really resonating with me right now. I do love a shingle siding. They always pick the perfect trim color, and the content they put out on Instagram in particular is really great.

02 - Eating - Tonkatsu & Salad with a photo of said meal on a lovely Japanese ceramic plate
I consider it a note from the universe that we had potatoes, her favorite, for dinner on the day that we lost Dolly. Nothing is random, and this was such a satisfying meal. We added crunchy onions to the top.
MAKE THIS TONIGHT

03 - Listening - The Isley Brothers with a cover of them from the early 70's in all their regalia
This is 100% NSFWIt is 100000% not for everyone.  But is it the playlist I turn to when I need to GET.  SHIT.  DONE. ?  It is.  And there’s been a lot to get done lately. I skip any of the songs with men on them.

04 - Reading - Heaven & Earth with an image of a windswept beach in winter
Not poems, not novels, something perfectly in between. And all about her connection to the earthly world around her, which feels like just the thing right now.

05 - Watching - The Muppets with an image of cast in the old school stage grid with multicolored lighting
Do I always make the recipes?  Heck no.  But they inspire me, give me ideas for other things, and are truly excellent background noise as I do house maintenance work (lists, paying, planning, etc).

06 - Making - Seedlings with an image of very small sprouts in a seed tray
As the seasons change, so does my need to replenish the house candles.  I have been re-using these glasses as candle holders for years.

An image of my last exterior design project in the Poconos in winter
07 - Working - Poconos Renovation
I truly love working on these homes, as they’re challenging, but always so rewarding in the end. And almost always - no neutral! I loved this warm and earthy color scheme for this 1920’s Craftsman original getting a glow-up from its newest custodian.
LET'S WORK TOGETHER
