#2 Next Chapter Catalyst Newsletter:
But What If I Don't Know What I Want?

Hi Friend,

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about that strange September shift.

Kids going back to school. Some leaving for college. Routines changing. A different version of “normal” starting to take shape.

And whether your life is changing because of kids, work, relationships, family or simply because you’re changing, I left you with a question:

What do I want now?

Which sounds simple until you actually try to answer it.

Because one of the things I hear most often from women is:

“Lucy, I genuinely don’t know.”

And I get it.

When you’ve spent years making decisions around what needs to happen next, what makes financial sense, what your family needs, what your job needs, what fits around everyone else...

your own wants can get pretty quiet.

Then suddenly we expect ourselves to answer:

What’s my purpose?

What should I do with my career?

What do I want the next 10 years to look like?

Those are HUGE questions.

So let's stop starting there.

Start smaller and look for the clues already showing up in your life.

Why This Matters

When a woman tells me “I don’t know what I want,” I rarely believe there’s nothing there.

Usually, as we start talking, things come out.

She misses feeling challenged.
She keeps thinking about an idea but dismisses it as unrealistic.
She envies a friend who has more freedom.
She knows she’s done with something, but has no idea what replaces it.
She wants more creativity, impact, independence, connection, fun...but none of it feels like a clear enough “answer.”

That’s the mistake.

We’re looking for an answer when there are already clues everywhere.

The things you miss. What you envy. What gives you energy. What you’re completely done with. The thought that keeps coming back even after you’ve talked yourself out of it.

Pay attention to those.

They’re telling you more than “I don’t know” is.
September Catalyst Prompt

This week, I want you
to sit with this:

If no one else had an opinion, what would
I want and do?

Give yourself 5 minutes before you bring in money, kids, partner, parents, age or what looks sensible.

What would you want more of? What would you stop doing? What would you finally let yourself explore?

Just notice what comes up before you explain
why you can't.
Stay curious.
Three Micro Moves for September
1. CATCH ONE “SHOULD”

I should stay. I should be grateful. I should know…

Catch 1 this week and ask: Do I actually believe that?

2. FOLLOW ONE ENVY

Yep, envy. Who has something you find yourself wanting?

Instead of feeling bad about it, get interested:
What does she have that I want more of in my own life?

There's a clue.

3. PUT TIME OR $ BEHIND ONE CURIOSITY

Pick one thing you keep wondering about and give it an hour or $50.

Try the class. Buy the ticket. Ask for the coffee. Go see for yourself.

Was there something there?

Get your curiosity out of your head and into your life.
