From Center Stage... If you’ve been following us for a while, you may remember our very talented four-legged local celebrity, M’Lynn! Last summer, M’Lynn made her Priscilla Beach Theatre debut as Bruiser in Legally Blonde. And when she earned a $1,000 acting stipend for her performance, her dads, Jeff LaForest and John Vincent, generously donated every dollar of it to Helping Hands to support other local pets in need. This summer, M’Lynn returned to the stage as Toto in The Wizard of Oz, appearing in 18 performances without a single misstep. Bravo! And once again, M’Lynn put her paycheck to good use! Jeff and John generously donated her entire $1,500 performance stipend to Helping Hands. (Don't worry, M'Lynn for plenty of post-performance treats to celebrate her stage success!) This is the kind of generosity that helps us be there for local pets and their people in all kinds of ways. Sometimes that means food in a bowl. Sometimes it means veterinary care. And sometimes, it means being there during one of the hardest moments of all. |

...To Being There When It Matters Most Recently, Helping Hands received a call from Shellie, who had been referred to us by her social worker at Vinfen, a community-based health and human services organization. Her beloved dog, Jackie, a six-year-old rescued Plott Hound, was suffering from end-stage kidney disease, and Shellie was facing the heartbreaking decision no pet owner ever wants to make. Jackie had already known hardship before Shellie adopted her a little over two years ago. But she had found her person — and she was deeply loved. As Jackie’s illness progressed, Shellie did everything she could to care for her, spending thousands of dollars on veterinary and critical care. But with Jackie’s quality of life continuing to decline, Shellie — who works part-time — found herself carrying an enormous financial burden alongside the emotional weight of knowing she may have to say goodbye. Her social worker knew about Helping Hands and suggested she reach out. It was a unique referral for us, but one that made perfect sense: someone already supporting Shellie recognized that caring for her also meant recognizing how deeply she cared for Jackie. And that’s where Helping Hands could step in. On August 21, sweet Jackie crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Not every pet we help gets the ending we wish we could give them. Sometimes our support helps a pet recover and return home. Sometimes it helps keep food in a bowl. And sometimes, it means supporting someone who has already given everything they can to the pet they love — and making sure they don’t have to face one of the hardest moments alone. That’s the incredible thing about one act of kindness: a happy moment for one pet owner can help another through one of their hardest. |
