Hi, ladies!

 

Back on track with the Sunday Weekend Update, and I hope this finds you well and enjoying the last official weekend of summer.

 

Every year around this time, I find myself on a mission to put an end to the premature "summer is over" talk. And don't even get me started on the pumpkin spice and Halloween décor showing up everywhere. 🙄 I know people love that stuff, but can we at least wait until October?

 

September is one of the most beautiful months of the year here in Newport, and I plan to enjoy every sunny summer day we have left.

 

That said...I do have a style business to run, and fall is undeniably the biggest season of the year when it comes to clothing. Maybe it goes back to those "back-to-school" shopping trips our moms took us on every September. Somewhere along the way, many of us started believing we need a whole new wardrobe every fall.

 

So here are my two reminders—for you and for me, because I'm guilty of this too:

 

👉🏼 First: Don't feel like you have to start "transitioning to fall" just because the calendar says September. If it's still hot, humid, and sunny where you are, keep wearing your favorite summer clothes (white pants included!). If you want a little change, mix in a few richer colors like chocolate, burgundy, olive, or deeper blues with your summer basics—but there's no need to go full-on fall just yet.

 

👉🏼 Second: Don't feel pressured to shop this early in the season. Yes, there are always a few pieces that sell quickly (I'll point a key one out in my Favorite Finds below), but for the most part, the stores will still have plenty of great fall options in October and November. If you're anything like me, shopping too early often means changing your mind by the time the weather actually feels like fall.

One of the easiest ways to make your everyday basics feel more like fall is to repeat a seasonal color through a couple of accessories—without overdoing it.

 

In this reel, I’m sharing how to use color strategically with shoes, bags, jewelry, jackets, and even sunglasses and toppers, so your outfit feels pulled together, but not overly matched.

2. The Dress Everyone Asked About

I wore this yellow eyelet dress to the Roger Federer induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame here in Newport this weekend, and I can't tell you how many women stopped me to ask me about it. 

 

I don't usually spend much on summer dresses, but this one looks like the pricey dresses you find in nearby boutiques.  It's 100% cotton eyelet, fully lined, has trumpet sleeves…PLUS it's incredibly comfortable and easy to wear.

 

It also comes in several other beautiful colors, including hot pink, red, and navy.

For sizing, I went up to a medium because I wanted a slightly looser fit and a little extra length.

 

And the best part? It's under $45...and no one ever has to know. 😉

3. This Week’s Find:  A Fall Piece that DOES Sell Out Early

This week I talked about why you don’t need to rush out and start buying fall clothes just because they’re showing up in stores. 

 

You’re not going to miss everything—and chances are, if you shop too early, you may find things you like even better once it actually feels like fall.

 

 

This is one category that tends to sell out surprisingly early each season, especially in the most wearable styles and sizes. 

 

So if you’ve been wanting to update yours—or add this incredibly versatile neutral to your wardrobe—this is something I’d shop for sooner rather than later.

 

This pair is a great example. It’s a flattering, modern style (a wide-leg that isn't too wide) that has worked well for many of my clients, can be worn year-round, and comes in classic, petite, and tall.  

 

➡️ A NOTE ON LENGTH: I especially like this style worn full length for fall—longer than they’re shown on the model. By “full length,” I mean the hem should fall close to the floor rather than hitting at or above the ankle. Try them on with the shoes you’re most likely to wear with them and aim for a long, clean line without the hem dragging on the ground.

 

A smart early-fall buy without buying a bunch of fall clothes you don’t need. 😘
