CHECK-IN | WEEK 3 | WET MATERIALS |
|
How are you doing with week 3? I hope you've been enjoying exploring with wet materials and and finding inspiration in the depths of the sea! If you read the emails from last week, you may know I had an unexpected plumbing issue / leak come up last weekend. Unfortunately, it caused extensive damage with asbestos abatement, water mitigation, and construction needed on the bathroom, kitchen, and part of my bedroom as the water spread into all those areas. It has been quite the process getting assessments and quotes, coordinating with the HOA, figuring out if I need to find a place to stay, etc. All of the time spent on that has put me really behind on several things! I haven't had a chance to read and reply to your emails and I wasn't able to update the gallery :( However, I will be doing both soon (and if you are able to upload to the gallery yourself, thank you, it's much appreciated!) Although it hasn't been fun to deal with, I'm grateful that the situation isn't worse and a solution is pending. I'm trying to take it day by day and go with the flow, no pun intended. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding! (And what a coincidence sea is our prompt and an abundance of water was sent my way 😅) Here's a few things for the rest of the week that might stir up some ideas: - Collaborate with water using ice: take small pieces of ice (smash up an ice cube, find some frost in your freezer) and place them on your paper. Add watercolor paint, ink, etc. on top and around the ice by brushing it on, dripping it, or using an eyedropper. Add as much color as you'd like then let the ice melt and dry! It's a fun surprise to see what it did and what the final results are!
- Let it drip Artist Chris Jacoub works with gravity and the viscosity of paint to add a special touch to his pieces
- Make some splatters One of the most fun things about wet materials is that you can use them to make splatters and splotches! I love dipping a brush into paint and tapping it or flicking a palette knife with paint on it and seeing what happens! This can get messy--I taped 3 large scrap cardboard pieces together (from finished paper pads) to make a splatter guard. It stands on its own and I can easily fold it up and store it when I'm not using it. It looks and functions like this.
- This is the Sea by the Waterboys I first head this song on the show, The 100, and really loved it (does anyone remember that scene?)
- Lending a helping hand As we explore the different elements, I am reminded by events happening around the world of how powerful and destructive they can be--from the earthquake in Colombia to the recent flash floods in Nepal. World Central Kitchen has been on the ground providing meals to communities affected by natural disasters and humanitarian crisis. If you're looking for a way to help, you can learn more about the work they do and donate here.
