Autumn settles in beautifully here. Cooler days invite slower afternoons, vineyards come into their own, and oyster season gives us every reason to gather by the water. Consider this your edit of what’s worth savoring this season.
COOLER WEATHER
Crisp Days
The first hint of fall arrives in the air. Cooler mornings and easy afternoons make this one of the best times to be outside—whether that means a walk by the water, a quiet afternoon in town, or simply lingering on the porch a little longer.
Fall is a good time to make your way to Good Luck Cellars in Kilmarnock. Between live music, food, wine and seasonal events, there’s almost always something happening at the vineyard — and it makes an easy addition to a Northern Neck getaway.
I celebrated a milestone birthday this year—60!—with one of my oldest and dearest friends on a small-group women’s hiking trip through Iceland with Backroads.
I’d never traveled  this way before, but I could get used to the concierge treatment! What made the trip so memorable were the experiences: hiking through Iceland’s extraordinary landscapes, eating truly amazing food, and getting a glimpse into a fascinating country and culture.
I  fell in love with the Icelandic horses. One morning, we woke up to find two of the right outside our hotel window—and a herd beyond them. Then the same ones that came to the window followed me down to the beach. It was magical.
We happened to be there for Iceland’s National Day, celebrating the country’s independence from Denmark, which made the visit feel even more special.
Iceland is wild, beautiful, interesting and unlike anywhere I’ve ever been. The perfect place to turn 60—and a wonderful way to kick off a new decade of adventures.
