Hi First name / Slothy!,
Monday, I had a mini spiral.
I get why it hits different this time of year: school's back in session, so students and teachers get a real reset button, and the rest of us don't get one until January 1st, which always feels forced and impossible in the coldest month of the year. So naturally, September ends up being the closest thing we have. After 15+ years in marketing, I also know it's no accident. It's the industry's way of shifting your focus right before Q4/the holidays, the biggest sales push of the year.
Knowing that didn't stop it from working on me, though.
This trend got me motivated enough to build a monthly reset note on my phone: what I want to focus on, what I'm dedicating this month to, etc. And then, almost immediately, the pressure showed up right behind it. I've had such a packed summer that making that list made me feel like I couldn't let off the gas for one second. Thank god for my husband, who talked me off that ledge.
I'm the systems girl, the one who's usually called in once a client's excitement fades, to help alleviate the pressure and build what comes next. This time, I was the one caught up in the hype and the pressure.
It reminded me that none of us are immune to this, no matter how much practice we have spotting it.
So here's my honest take on this whole "September is the new New Year" thing.
How you define success is nobody's business but your own. It's fun to get excited, make the list, grab the supplies, and start chipping away at your goals. But we also have to make room for the phase that comes after the excitement wears off. Nobody puts that part in a cute, trendy reel, but it's just as real as the exciting dopamine hit part.
What should be normalized and talked more about is that a real fresh start happens on your terms. It can happen whenever you need it most, when starting fresh beats trying to repair what's broken, or when the timing is finally right for you, not because a calendar or a trend says so.
A fresh start or reset is a real commitment. You're choosing a new way of living over how you've been doing things, even on the day it isn't glamorous anymore.
That's challenging. And oh so brave.
So take your time with it.
Whenever it lands for you, whether that's this week, next spring, or some random Tuesday nobody's hyping up.
Either way, I'll be in the wings cheering you on.
