Happy Sunday Everyone! This week I want to talk about forgiving yourself for the past. This topic is because this week I have been falling back into old habits of judging my past. Now I have forgiven my past, but like all things I don't just forgive myself once I find that this is an ongoing lesson for me.
Too many people judge and hate their past selves and continue to judge the person they are today based on their past self. I used to be one of those people until someone asked me “why are beating yourself up for the person you used to be? Why don't you forgive yourself for not knowing what you know today?”
That hit me hard for what I heard is “why are you beating yourself up for a past you that did not know any better?” I have to remember I am not the same person I was 10 years, 5 years or even 1 year ago. We keep growing and learning and that is the key - learning how to do better.
But we can't keep holding on to the things we did not do well because at the time we did not have the tools we may have today. I find that when I do fall into the self-judging crap that I am judging my past self based on who I am today. The problem with that is that my past self did not have what I have today. I did not have the tools, the wisdom, the knowledge I have today just like tomorrow I will know more than I know today.
We learn, we grow and we forgive. Anyone who knows me knows I love working with Sigils, especially in meditation, a year ago I had the forgiveness sigil tattoo'd to remind me to forgive myself. Now I am not saying people need to tattoo themselves, but this was something that was right for me (see picture below.)
Every time I see this tattoo I think “oh yeah I am no longer that person and I forgive her for not knowing better.” Everyone has a past and in that past we all have things we are proud of and we all have things we are ashamed of. It's ok, that's called life. What is not ok is if you are still judging the person you are today based on the past. Because I guarantee you that you are no longer that person.
So, my hope is that you will be able to release your old self and stop holding your current self responsible for the things your past self did. All any of us can do is make amends if safe to do so and strive to do better each and every day. Learn the lesson, thank the lesson and forgive yourself! This is the start of inner peace!
(see my tattoo of the forgiveness sigil below)
Saying for the forgiveness sigil:
“I forgive myself for all the mistakes that hold me. I accept accountability. I forgive those who never and never will apologize to me. For my higher self I choose me. As I will, so mote it be.”
