The pepper on the grocery shelf didn’t grow there.

 

Before it reaches a kitchen table, people have to grow, harvest, transport, store, and distribute it. Farmers, wholesalers, drivers, grocers, warehouse teams, retailers– an entire relay of hands work to get food from the field to your fridge. And it works. This food system feeds 80% of our population. That’s something to celebrate.

 

But here in Kansas City, 1 in 5 of our neighbors – nearly 375,000 people, including 1 in 4 children – experience food insecurity. Nationally, that number climbs to 47 million people, 14 million of them children. 

Not because there isn’t enough food, but because too much of it never makes the final mile.

 

Our food system runs on purchasing power. Trucks travel routes where sales cover the cost of delivery, and that leaves some communities outside those routes.

 

Our fix isn't a new food system. It’s closing the last mile.

 

Kanbe’s strengthens our food system by closing its gaps – building infrastructure that carries fresh food to where the market won’t reach.

This Hunger Action Month, we’re putting Sip & Prep to work for our nonprofit partners. They’ll tell us what their kitchens need, and we’ll bring the vegetables, drinks, music, and extra hands to wash, peel, chop, and pack it all up for their kitchens.
