WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN A PLACE DISAPPOINTS YOU?

You know that feeling when a place is objectively fine, but you're just not vibing with it?

The apartment's good. The town's good. Nothing's actually wrong. But a few days in, you realize you're not loving it the way you thought you would. Maybe the neighborhood's quieter than you wanted. Maybe getting around is way more annoying than it looked on the map. Maybe the town's gorgeous, but there's just not much to do that fits how you actually like to spend your time.

That's a weirdly hard thing to admit, honestly — especially after all the planning, the money you dropped on the apartment, and how excited you were to get there.

We used to figure that if we picked a place carefully enough, we'd like it. Turns out that's not really how it works. You can do all the research, read every review, check the transit and the grocery situation, and still land somewhere that just doesn't feel right.

So then the question is: now what?

If it's a short stay, honestly, sometimes you just let it be what it is. Not every place has to become a favorite, and you don't need to keep hunting for reasons to convince yourself you love it. You can still eat well, go for a walk, see a few things, and move on when it's time.

If we're there longer, we usually try to figure out if it's actually the place, or just how we've been spending our days. Sometimes switching up the routine helps — checking out a different neighborhood, taking a day trip, finding a better grocery store, or just giving up on forcing ourselves into whatever part of town everyone says you're supposed to love.

And sometimes... nothing really changes.

That doesn't mean the stay was a waste, though. It usually teaches you something about what you actually want next time. Maybe you need more energy around you. Maybe walkability matters more than you thought. Maybe being near a train station beats having the prettiest apartment.

The longer we travel, the less we expect every single place to be a perfect fit. Some spots are fun to visit but not somewhere you'd want to live again. Some are totally nice, just not your thing.

We've gotten a lot better at just accepting that instead of making it a bigger deal than it needs to be.

Not every stop has to be a favorite. Sometimes the whole point is just figuring out why it wasn't.

We landed in Bologna with a pretty clear picture in our heads of what the month would be like — and spent the first few days just seeing how much of that picture actually held up.
