Fall Environmental Justice Book Club |
|
The 13th installment of the Environmental Justice Zoom Book Club (EJZBC) is here! The book club will convene for 4 75-minute sessions on Zoom, every other Wednesday starting September 30 and ending November 4. There is no requirement to have any past knowledge of environmental justice, just a willingness to learn and engage. Even if you're not sure you can join more than 1 or 2 sessions, or if you have missed the first sessions, you are encouraged to lead with learning and participate at your own level. With all that said, the Fall 2026 book is: Restoring the Pitchfork Ranch: How Healing a Southwest Oasis Holds Promise for our Endangered Land by A. Thomas Cole. The book not only helps answer the question of "what can I do," per Bill McKibben; but it also provides a story of restoration. The book is available as an e-book at Auraria Library and is available for checkout at Denver Public Library. |

Waste Characterization Study Recap |
|
This September, the ASCP conducted the second and final round of its Waste Characterization Study in collaboration with Diversion Designers. The ASCP received a grant from Colorado Circular Communities Enterprise (C3) to conduct the study. Over the course of the month, staff worked hard to collect samples of campus waste from buildings. Those samples were then taken to the sorting area, and each bag of trash and recycling was hand sorted by a team of hard workers and volunteers. Waste was organized by material into over 50 different categories ranging from aluminum cans to certified compostable plastic service ware to batteries. Each category of material was weighed and recorded to use in the upcoming analysis stage. This study will help the ASCP better understand the state of waste streams diversion on campus by providing rich, detailed data to guide programs, policies, and actions. By studying the types of waste from each building, the ASCP can find patterns of potential gaps in education and diversion programs. Ultimately, an up-close look at your trash can tell you a lot! Stay posted for more details and conclusions as the study is ongoing. |

Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer Subsidy Program |
|
The Auraria Sustainable Campus Program (ASCP) is excited to announce the official launch of the Ultra-Low Temperature (ULT) Freezer Subsidy Program through our Green Labs program. Please help us spread the word by sharing this email with your department and colleagues. Ultra-low temperature freezers are among the most energy-intensive pieces of equipment found in research laboratories. To promote energy efficiency, the ASCP is now offering subsidies of up to $3,500 per ULT freezer to assist laboratories in purchasing qualifying high-efficiency ULT freezers. These freezers can reduce energy consumption by up to 70% compared to conventional models, helping to lower costs while reducing campus emissions. The subsidy program is open to all institutions across campus. Priority will be given to laboratories replacing older ULT freezers, though requests for new freezer capacity with demonstrated need are also encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted during two funding cycles each year: - Fall: September 17 – October 30 (Awards announced November 7)
- Winter: January 18 – February 28 (Awards announced March 7)
To learn more about eligibility requirements, the application process, and qualifying equipment, please click the link below. If you have any questions, please reach out to greenlabs@ahec.edu. |
