I had one of those moments recently when I walked away from a conversation thinking...
WHY did I just say that?!
I was with a group of new tennis friends here in Newport, chatting with a women I'd just met, when she asked me what I did.
Simple question, right?
Well, apparently not for me. 🤪
For some reason, I started by saying I didn't work.
Then I awkwardly explained that I actually DID have an online business.
And when I finally got around to explaining that I'm a personal stylist who helps women over 50 with their wardrobes, I somehow managed to tell her that women like the group we were with weren't really my target audience.
WHAT?!
I went on to explain that I mostly helped women who struggled with style.
Ugh.
But here's the thing. These women were beautifully dressed, clearly had great taste, and I was a little intimidated.
I was trying to compliment her, but instead I basically told her she couldn't possibly need my help.
Ten years in business, and THAT was my elevator pitch. 🙄
But here's where the story gets interesting.
The very next day, a local friend reached out asking for style help.
This woman has beautiful clothes. She has great taste. She certainly doesn't need help finding nice things to buy.
But she's stuck.
She's spent years dressing for a high-powered professional career, and now she's living a much more casual life here in Newport.
She knows it's time to update her look, but she's not quite sure where to start.
She doesn't need someone to teach her how to dress.
She needs someone to help her figure out what works for her NOW.
So through a few text conversations, I helped her figure out what she needed and put together a personalized catalog with specific suggestions for updated pants that would suit her current lifestyle and body type.
And she was blown away by how helpful it was!
Here's something I sometimes forget: What seems obvious to me after spending ten+ years doing this can be a real eye-opener for someone who doesn't live and breathe this stuff every day.
I take for granted how much value there is in simply helping someone see their options, make better decisions, and know where to start.
And that really drove home how ridiculous my conversation the day before had been.
Because here's something I know after years of helping women with their wardrobes:
Having great clothes and having a wardrobe that works are NOT the same thing.
You can have a closet full of beautiful clothes and still wear the same five outfits on repeat.
You can have excellent taste and still buy things you never wear.
You can know exactly what you like and still struggle to put together an outfit for an ordinary Wednesday.
And you can have plenty of clothes that worked beautifully for your life ten years ago but don't make much sense for your life today.
Sound familiar?
That's exactly where I come in.
I don't help women because they don't have style.
I help them when their wardrobes stop working for them.
Sometimes that means seeing new possibilities in clothes they already own.
Sometimes it means updating a few pieces that are keeping everything else looking dated.
And sometimes it means giving them a clear reason to stop forcing clothes that simply aren't working anymore.
Because most women don't need a whole new wardrobe.
We just get stuck on repeat.
And that brings me back to something I say all the time...
Getting dressed shouldn't feel like a creative project every morning.
You should be able to open your closet, put together something you like, and get on with your day.
So here's a little something to try this week:
Think about one outfit you've been wearing on repeat for years.
Is it still working for you? Or are you wearing it simply because it's familiar and easy?
Maybe all it needs is a different pair of shoes, an updated pant silhouette, or a new way of putting the pieces together.
You don't necessarily need to replace everything.
Sometimes you just need a fresh set of eyes.
And apparently, sometimes I need a reminder of what I actually do for a living. LOL.
#justgetdressed,
Beth 😘
P.S. The kind of personalized help I gave my friend is exactly what I offer through Style Access. If you could use a second opinion on your wardrobe, here's how it works. 👇🏼
