Performa Choreographic incubator #006 |
One week. Two studios. Community model. |
Hello First name / friends near and dear! The week-long engagement activates architectural space to support emerging performance by independent artists. Participants will access two studios situated in the East Passyunk neighborhood of South Philly for an exciting “campus” feel. It’s a prime window of time in the winter. Performa 006 occurs during most academic breaks and is the week prior to JanArtsNYC performance conferences. The deep freeze outside offers clarity for personal focus and physicality to develop your choreographic mind or future Fringe production. |

Monday to Friday Jan. 4 — 8 |
11am - 1pm: Guided morning process at a new studio by Equilibrium Dance Academy (near Broad + Morris). 988 sq ft of dance space encourages quiet, hyper-focus on body language and shifts of intention. 1pm - 3pm: Down time! Make use of meeting space in the studio lobby, access the Free Library across Broad Street, get lunch, or co-work at a café. 3pm - 6pm: Open Studio for independent practice in a community setting at the Ginko Center (formerly the Chi Movement Art Center). 1,500 sq ft of space offers room to roam, generate long movement phrases, and collaborate with others. The mid-day break gives artists options to stay in their process all day in search of fresh perspective. Mosaics, alleyways, murals, spaces for personal reset, and local whimsy abound. The studios are ADA compliant, located 15 minutes apart by foot or 5 minutes by car, with ample public transit in the area. |

Friday & Saturday Jan. 8 — 9 |
Two free, public work-in-progress performances let artists iterate within their craft to gain a deeper understanding. The WIP’s will be salon style; stripped down, informal, and all about research in the room — and I’ll be encouraging participants to practice making invitations. (With templates!) Work-in-progress Friday, Jan 8th, 5-6pm Saturday, Jan 9th, 2-3pm (formerly the home of Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers) To participate in the work-in-progress, artists must attend at least 55% or cumulative 5 of 9 sessions during Performa 006. Artists may register for the full series or drop-in day by day. Documentation and digital resources for ongoing development are included. |

Here’s what I recommend to you. Reserve the full week, or as much you can, to inhabit your creative practice fully. The cost of attendance this winter is made low by placing trust in the community. When several or a dozen artists attend Performa, the pooled resources generate greater access to studios, professional tools, and guidance. This is a valuable moment along the journey of continued growth of Performa; I’ll be there with you the whole way through. Catalyze your new work this winter! As ever, Adam |
