One Your Mark, Get Set, Go Milestones!

I’m not a planner. I have an idea, turn it into an objective and mentally develop a strategy on-the-go of how I’m going to obtain that objective. I do my best work when my back is against the wall, or so I think. When it comes to establishing a business however, things must be done differently. Objectives must be clearly identified up front and a detailed plan of execution must be identified. Your business idea may be huge and seem overwhelming, but if you break things down and use milestones to pace yourself, you can move towards living your dream.

Milestones are a critical component to any project or program under development. Think of them as landmarks. Before GPS became popular or affordable, I often used landmarks along my planned travel route to let me know the distance to my destination. Milestones are critical and can provide a means to prevent fatigue or burnout along your entrepreneurial journey. They can help break down huge plans into achievable pieces. In a meeting, I once heard someone say, “You can eat an elephant one bite at a time.” Milestones are the bite at a time. Identify your goal, create a plan, set realistic milestones, and execute. Slow and steady wins the race and allows you to get plenty of rest along the way. Visualize your dream – now get up and start moving towards it!
