Eloquent Light:
35 Years of Exceptional Photography Workshops

We're Eloquent Light and we're passionate about photography . . .

Now is the time to get back out in the world and take a photography workshop. Why should you join us? We are experts and working photographers; we offer small groups with lots of individual attention. In other words, we know how to help you make great photographs!

Who are we? Award-winning fine-art photographer Craig Varjabedian with his studio manager Cindy Lane founded Eloquent Light 35-years ago. Craig received his Master of Fine Arts degree (MFA) from the prestigious Rochester Institute of Technology. Our program was born in the magnificent red hills of Ghost Ranch—a landscape made famous by painter Georgia O’Keeffe. We love photography, we love New Mexico, and we love sharing one of the most beautiful places on earth with photographers from all over the world.

We teach photography out in the world because we believe that is where it is best learned. Many instructors try to teach in front of a computer or a screen in a classroom. But we believe that learning how to use your own equipment—where to point the camera and deal with a host of technical issues while standing in front of an incredible subject bathed in breathtaking light—is critical in learning how to make great photographs.

So we’ll pledge you this: We will continue to offer the best photography workshops, and when you join us we will help you take better photographs and improve their quality in the field and in the studio. In addition to our scheduled workshops, we offer private workshops and personal coaching, too, tailored to your schedule and specific needs.

And so we invite you to join us on an adventure with your camera in beautiful New Mexico and other places too. Please feel free to contact us by e.mail or by phone at (505) 983-2934 with any questions

WORKSHOP
The Autumn Spell of New Mexico

September 20 - 24, 2021

There is something magical about New Mexico. It is in the wind and sounds and even the precise color of the azure blue sky that stretches as far as the eye can see and maybe even further. And there is the light— the most beautiful light of varied color and intensity that has called artists to this enchanted land for centuries, a light that describes and reveals this magical landscape . . .

WORKSHOP
The Great White Sands

October 25 - 29, 2021

The Great White Sands . . . 271 square miles of absolutely magnificent gleaming white sand dunes, all underneath an ever changing magical sky. The light is absolutely beautiful here yet words will never come close to conveying the beauty of what the photographer will experience when photographing this magical landscape . . .

LAST LIGHT
Spirit Dancing

"The photograph you ask about, Spirit Dancing on the Steps of the Church, is a very special image for me. The day I made this picture, the weather looked like it might thwart us; a storm was moving in rapidly from the west and had consumed the sky turning it dark which in turn stole the sun from the surrounding landscape.

In a fleeting moment when Anthony, an Omaha Native American Powwow dancer, perhaps inspired by the church and the northern New Mexico landscape that surrounds it, moved into a crouching dance position (Prairie Chicken perhaps?) on the steps of that church, a hole in the clouds appeared in the sky and a shaft of light fell to the ground bathing Anthony in the most beautiful light.

I only had time to make one exposure before a huge gust of wind came along and the sky closed up and within moments rain began to fall and we took cover. For me magic often appears in evanescent moments like these. Chief Dan George had it right when he said, “Sometimes the magic works . . ."⁣
