Digital Book Club
February 2022 Week 1

Hey First name / friend

I hope you enjoyed last week's explanation of industry standard book ratings! This week, I want to talk about highlights, annotations, and tabs inside books.

Do you ever mark up the pages of your books? It might lower resale value, but I love adding highlights and annotations to my books. That way, the next person to read it will be able to experience the story through my eyes. I also enjoy using colorful sticky tabs instead of highlighters for variety.

When I read a book, I'm reading it as a writer and a reviewer. So, I mark certain phrases or passages using the following system:
  • Blue: great writing (word choice, tone, detail, worldbuilding, character development)
  • Purple: relatable
  • Orange: empowering
  • Pink: comforting
  • Green: thought-provoking
  • Yellow: funny or cute
Additionally, if I have a specific thought on the highlighted or tabbed passage, I'll jot down a word or two in pencil on the margins.

This system helps me to return to well-written paragraphs for further analysis or isolate key quotes for reviews. Plus, it's colorful and fun and engages me in the reading!

What's your system for highlights, annotations, and tabs?

If you're anything like me, you probably feel out of place in a room full of people. Maybe you loathe small talk and can't seem to figure out why others love it so much. Or it could be that people in general just seem foreign to you. That's a normal neurodivergent experience. No matter how you feel about communication with others, the isolation we experienced during our global pandemic seems to have left even the most sparkling conversationalists with reduced social aptitude.

How to Talk to Anyone gives simple, actionable tips to help all of us improve our communication with others. If you apply the suggestions in this book, you'll leave other people feeling delighted and respected after your conversation. Even better, you'll feel like a charming superstar by avoiding awkwardness, boredom, and irritation during social engagements.

I've really enjoyed listening to the audiobook version of How to Talk to Anyone before I go to sleep at night. I know you'll love it too!
