Well hey there First name / friend!

First, we hope that you are doing okay. These are definitely complex times in the world, and we hope that you are taking care of yourself.

We've gotten a decent amount of new newsletter sign ups lately, so for those of you new around here, we send emails every Wednesday with some life and clarinet tips. It's Clarinet Wednesday! Or something.

Tiffany here today, and I'd like to share with you two podcasts that I really enjoyed listening to this week and a harmonics exercise that I love!

I've been listening to the Huberman Lab Podcast for about a year now, and I love it. It's hosted by Dr. Andrew Huberman, professor of neurobiology and ophthalmology at Stanford. The podcast discusses neuroscience—how our brain and its connections with the organs of our body control our perceptions, our behaviors, and our health.

#1: In the “Science of Setting and Achieving Goals”, Huberman riffs on why a healthy dose of negative thinking may actually be very crucial to achieving goals - among many other things. I've been interested in this negative-thinking-strategy for many years and was really excited to hear the science behind why it works!

#2: “Optimize your Mindset” had me stopping on the sidewalk to type a few quotes, like this one: Behaviors matter. And so do mindsets. Much of the conversation was about how we shape our reactions to stress based on our preconceived notions about it. It was a wonderful reminder that not all stress is bad, and our mindsets are absolutely crucial in supporting or hindering our behaviors.

Now, some clarinet! The directions for this one are simple:

* Finger the bottom notes, play the top notes
* Play slowly and lyrically
* As you move up the octave, think of a big, warm, round sound. Don't let it get thin and weird and pinched.
* Find stability in the harmonics, not just a brief second of luck! Take care of the octave interval, and really hear the upper note before you move to it.

This is a SERIOUSLY good exercise for voicing, air support, vocalism and flexibility. I am a huge fan of exercises that build flexibility and exploration because they make us pay attention and troubleshoot!

So, happy clarineting and podcast listening. Have a wonderful week, and see many of you tonight, we hope!

Much love,
Tiffany & Ixi
