Hi friend,

A quick admin note to begin with:

I keep hearing excellent things about Substack, so I'm considering moving the Body Liberation Guide over there. I plan to run a one-week test of their system next week.

You won't need to do anything – I'll move your email address over for the test – and I'll keep you updated on any upcoming changes.

Also!
I've got an audacious goal of being a guest on 70 podcasts by the end of this year. If you have a podcast, the answer is YES — I would love to be on it.

(As long as you're not interviewing only thin people/white people or pushing diets or intentional weight loss in any form. If you've been reading the Body Liberation Guide, you know what I'm about!)

Here's a link to book a time with me, so go right ahead.

I can talk about:
» Size diversity in photography and stock photos
» My lived experience in a fat body
» General body image and body positivity
» Weight stigma
» Power dynamics as they relate to beauty, profit and fat bodies
» Health at Every Size, intuitive eating, healthcare and similar topics from a fat-centered lens
» A topic of your choice

My experience on previous podcasts includes Food Psych, It's Okay to Feel (with NAMI Orange County), Real Health Radio, Power Pivot, Friend of Marilyn, Body Liberation for All and Escape Diet Prison.

Hope to see your name on my calendar!

And finally, a followup to my piece on how taking COVID precautions is an act of fat allyship.

Since then, here in the United States, what few protections were in place are being relaxed.

Lots of people are saying lots of smart things about it, so I'll just add:

Telling COVID-vulnerable people to just stay home is awful for so many reasons beyond just shutting us out of public life.

1) Let me emphasize that shutting anyone out of public life, especially deliberately, is horrible on so many levels. No one should be excluded from public life.

2) Making marginalized people invisible increases our stigma. As a fat person I'm at risk because of weight stigma in healthcare, not because my body is inherently sick; if I get it, I'm likely to be treated last and worst.

Shutting fat folks away will just make that worse.

3) It's awfully convenient how with marginalized people out of the picture, not only do body-privileged people not even have to look at us, there are that many more public resources to be split among fewer people.

That's pretty horrible.

Warmly,
Lindley

P.S. Share this week's letter or save to read later here. It's only possible to offer the Body Liberation Guide and all its labor for free because people like you support it. If you find value here, please contribute for as little as $1 per month. Every dollar helps.

The Conversation

Here's what's being discussed this week in the world of body acceptance, Health at Every Size® (HAES), body positivity and fat liberation:

» Allyship opportunity: Help a fat, disabled Black woman move to a more accessible apartment: TheLadyALX on both Venmo and CashApp

"The Fantasy of Being Thin is a really convenient excuse for not asking yourself those questions sincerely — and that’s exactly why it’s dangerous. It keeps you from being not only who you are, but who you actually could be, if you worked with what you’ve got.

And that person trapped inside you really might be cooler than you are right now. She’s just not thin." » Kate Harding
