I've just returned from an amazing trip that included Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand. I'm just beginning to process the inspiration though I did share a few images on Instagram and Facebook. We'll see how this trip finds its way into my art and creative life in the coming months. Now that we're home, autumn is in full swing. I bought pumpkins at my first trip to the grocery store. Then I began to think more about pumpkins and found some inspiring things to share. Do you have pumpkins on your porch, or table or mantle? Then scroll down for some new artwork and other upcoming events. Thanks so much for subscribing and connecting. ☺️

  1. I discovered this mesmerizing stop motion video featuring pumpkins that combines many things I love: dots, zippy music, behind the scenes shots, and mind-blowing dedication to a project. It's less than two minutes long and I know you're going to love it. Thinking about how I might be inspired by this project, I come back to the idea of repetition and deep exploration of patterns. 🤔
  2. I love the classic orange pumpkin, but there are so many other beautiful varieties. So many shapes, colors and sizes. There are even different kinds of twisted, ropey, vine-like stems. If I'm ever in need of inspiration for a new color palette or botanical shape, I could explore pumpkins. (I'll confess I don't love the warty ones.)
  3. I can't talk about art and pumpkins without mentioning Yayoi Kusama. In 2018, the Dallas Museum of Art exhibited Kusama's “All the Eternal Love I Have For Pumpkins.” I saw it several times and each experience was different. Sometimes I was in the room with other visitors, sometimes with a docent, sometimes alone. Sometimes there was a long line. Sometimes no wait at all. Again, the inspiration here is about repetition. So many dots, but also so much opportunity for new insights from repeated experiences.

Studio Update
In the last issue, I shared this collection of fabrics I'd pulled in preparation for creating a new art quilt collage.

And here's the finished art quilt collage made from this fabric palette. Can you pick out some of the fabrics from picture above and see where I used them?

WITH DEBORAH BOSCHERT
I launched Follow Up Sessions last April and they've been so fun! Thanks to everyone who has attended. These events include short group exercises, conversation, Q&A and a supportive group of artistic folks. You can read more about the format of these “pay what you wish” events here
The mini-presentation for the Follow Up Session on Sunday, October 30 at 7pm CT will be Words and Text on Art Quilts. I created the text in the image below with a tulle overlay. I'll demo this technique plus talk about how and why I might use text on an art quilt.
