Digital Book Club
March 2023 Week 2

Greetings, First name / reader:

Welcome back! I trust you found last week’s discussion of my enneagram type enlightening.

This week, I want to show you a spectacular, useful new improvement that Spotify has made. The groundbreaking feature I’m about to show you is available to both Spotify premium and free users on desktop and mobile alike.

I’m talking about “picked just for you” mixes. Spotify is all about personalization, so the algorithm keeps track of which artists, genres, and playlists you listen to and when you listen. Using a mix of machine learning, human quality control, and incredible programming, Spotify has released a MASSIVE new list of keywords you can search for when you’re looking for the perfect music for your mood, activity, or even weather!

What this means for you is that, no matter what music you’re craving, Spotify will serve up a customized, curated playlist based on your past listening and the tastes of users who like the same music as you. Each mix playlist contains some songs you know and love and a bunch that you don’t know but that Spotify predicts you’ll love. If you come across a song you hate, just skip it, and Spotify will learn and adjust.

To find these personalized mixes, go to the Spotify search bar and type in picked just for you, then select Playlists.

You’ll notice that a pretty much endless stream of playlists will generate. To make the selection process easier, I went into my own Spotify and made a list of 227 keywords the algorithm recognizes so you can find just the right mix for writing, reading, exercising, cooking, cleaning, driving, or whatever it is you’re doing today.

Here’s my mega-list of Spotify mix keywords based on genre, decade, mood, environment, activity, day, weather, season, culture, and time, collected just for you:

(The video game keyword was cut off, unfortunately—the full keyword is video game music.)

Now, in case any of these keywords aren’t exactly what you’re looking for, you can also MIX AND MATCH various keywords! Want a fantasy ambient mix? Spooky instrumental forest mix? Euphoric sad mix? Pirate soundtrack mix? 70s feel good mix? Just type in any of those bold keyphrases, or make up your own, and pop it into Spotify’s search bar!

Curious what Nicole and I listen to while we work on Girl in the Sea and other writing projects? Here’s a list of our favorite playlists based on our personal music tastes (so, remember, our mix playlists will be different from the mix playlist Spotify generates for you on your account, even if you search using the same keywords).

Instrumental Mysterious Forest Mix (We’re listening to this one now!)

We hope you enjoy these perfectly personalized mixes, especially when digging into a fantastic book or exciting writing project. If you’d like to see more of what we listen to, please follow us on Spotify! ⭐ We’d love to connect and share more music.
