Happy Friday!
At the beginning of the pandemic, my daughter sliced her ankle on a piece of glass and we had to rush her to the emergency room. She was 6 at the time, and terrified that she needed stitches. It was an entire thing, and when it was finally over, I was so relieved. I leaned over to kiss her and tell her she was so brave. As soon as my lips hit her forehead, I let out the loudest fart humanely possible. I froze, still hunched over, hoping the nurse wasn't still behind me. As I slowly resumed position, my body let out an even longer, squeakier sound similar to a balloon losing all it's air. I was MORTIFIED.

I turned around and confirmed that the nurse was indeed still there. In an effort to break the awkward silence I said, “haha at least we're all wearing masks, right?” She offered me a nervous laugh, and promptly left the room.

Be a water buffalo

There's a lot of sh*t going on in the world right now, and I thought I'd share a story from one of my favorite books, Be Where Your Feet Are, that I think is relevant right now.

For some context, there's a Youtube video with over 90 million views called the Battle at Kruger that takes place in a watering hole in Kenya. In the video, there are 4 different groups--tourists, water buffalo, lions, and crocodile. The tourists are watching and narrating the entire thing. You then see a herd of buffalo walk towards a water hole, and the camera pans out and you see that lions are crouching (all while the tourists are still narrating behind the camera). The lions go toward the buffalo, and end up attacking the smallest little baby. You see the handful of buffalo run off. The lions tackle the baby and somehow fall into the water hole where a crocodile snaps the hind leg of the baby, and the lion and the crocodile are playing tug of war with it. The lions are able to gain control, and you can hear the tourists cheer on camera. Then suddenly a herd of 300 water buffalo come shoulder to shoulder going towards the lions. They're able to use their horns and knock down the lions, and save the baby.

Scott O'Neil, the author of the book, used that story on his first day running a team. This is what he said:

I asked everybody pretty simply, ‘Do you want to be the tourist that watches something happen?’ I said, ‘That's not how I live. If there's a piece of paper on the ground, pick it up. Do you want to be a lion and go after the weak?’ I was like, ‘There are plenty of people who are weak here, whether they're customers or clients or fans or security guards or our coworkers. Or do you want to be a crocodile that, when someone is down, you go after those that are down?
‘Or do you want to be a water buffalo? The water buffalo are the extraordinary teammates. They don't let anybody fall. They catch you before you fall.’

I think about this story often.
